To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, IGNATZ GOLDBERGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Undergarments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a high-neck buttonless suit or vest and drawers in one structure that has no vertical or horizontal slit on front or back for the body-opening, but which is provided with two iiaps which overlap each other and are attached either to the front or to the back of body portion and having their inclined edges running diagonally left open for the slit-opening to enable the wearer to draw same over the hips with ease, while these overlapping parts, when the garment has been fully drawn on, are secured by a suitable attachment at the upper edge of the neck-opening, which when fastened will close the opening in a way that it will not pncker or gape open; also has a double layer ot' cloth through the whole extent of opening, which gives ample protection against cold and drafts.

The object of my invention is to construct a buttonless high-necked union-suit, the body portion of which will be free from any vertical or horizontal slits forthe body-opening, yet to have an opening for the body to enter constructed in such a manner as to allow sam e to be drawn over the hips of the wearer with ease, and when drawn on will close over the body, making it unnecessary to use buttons or any other fasteners, also to have a double layer of cloth to overlap said opening to prevent tlle cold air or drafts from striking the body of the wearer, which object has not been attained in union-suits heretofore made. A union-suit the opening of which is made in the manner that I shall fully describe in my invention will considerably lessen the cost of manufacture, and if worn by females the same opening can be used for nursing with the greatest ease and comfort.

My invention consists in certain features of noveltyto be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of the upper portion of a union-suit, showing only the body portion from neck down to waist-line. Fig. 2 is a view of the opening 2, running from the waist-line tothe neck. A iiap 3, formed substantially in the shape of a right-angle triangle, has its vertical edge attached at 4 along the right-hand side of the opening, and is then lapped over across the opening and upon the left-hand side of the body and is stitched along the base or waist-line, as shown at 5. This leaves the diagonally-inclined edge 6 open. Another flap 7, of similar shape, is then secured in place by having its perpendicular edge stitched along the left-hand side of the opening, as shown at 8, and lapped over the opening and the right-hand side of the body on the inside of the garment and is stitched on its base at the waist-line, as shown at 9. This leaves an opening, as indicated at lO, between the iiap 7 and the inner side of the garment. The flaps being thus secured in place, they are held together at top by a sin gle button ll and buttonhole l2.

When carrying out the invention according to the plan represented in Figs. 5, 6, and

7, the cloth is cut bias from neck to waist, as`

shown in Fig. 5, from A to C, and the edges thus formed are finished so as to be inelastic. A piece of cloth cut in the shape shown in Fig. 6 is then sewed or knitted to the garment and its edge running from A to B' iinished so as to be inelastic. The edge running from A to D is sewed or knit to the shoulder portion A D, and the side D O is sewedor knit to the side D O of the garment, and the lower edge O' to B is sewed or knit onto the outside of the garment, running horizontally along the front of the waist-line. Moreover, I retain the same essential features of the opening, namely, the closure formed of two overlapped portions, extendingand stitched together at bottom along the front or back waistline, and having free edges converging upwardly from the ends of said line and meeting at a neck-fastening, as shown. By the modified method I retain all the advantages of that shown by Figs. l to 4, with the ad diiional advantage of avoiding one vertical seam entirely and locating the other at one side.

Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

An undergarment comprising 4a body portion having a neck-opening and a body-opening extending from said neck-opening to the Waist-line of the garment, and two closingiiaps located over the body and overlapping ing to the Waist-line at the opposite side sov as to provide two thicknesses of material at the body-opening, the iiaps being stitched together from side to side at the Waist-line, substantially as described.
