es it known thatI, Sonoaron 'Wmeirr, Jr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montclair, county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Undergarments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accmpanying drawings.

My invention relates to undergarments for men women and children, and has to it do particularly with the construction of the opening in the upper part of the garment. The invention relates primarily to union undergarments, but may also be embodied in under-shirts. i 1 Union undergarments have ordinarily been made with a front opening extending from the neckto the crotch and closed by a large number of buttons and buttonholcs which are expensive to the maker of the garment, and inconvenient and uncomfortable for the wearer. Attempts have been made to do away with this front opening and its attendant objections in two ways, (first) by providing one or more openings extending from the neck opening to the arm-scyes, as shown in the patent to Belotti, dated November 23, 1915, Serial No. 1,161,489, but it is found that a garment when thus constructed is inconvenient to button and likely to be torn when being put on or taken off; (second) by providing diagonal openings extending from the neck opening to the arnrscyes, the garment being held together by a single button at the top as shown in the patent to Hatch No. 1,100,657 dated June 16, 1914. Eiuch garments are likely to gape at the diagonal openings and have three thicknesses of material under the button which is likely to be uncomfortable for the wearer.

Accordingly, my invention has for its ob ject to provide a garment having the advantages but not the objections of the three types of garments already mentioned.

The undergarment embodying my invention is provided with two slits extending from the neck opening diagonally downward, the top ends of said slits joining the neck opening at a point between the front median line of the garment and the shoulder scam, the lower end of said slits being between the front median line of the garment and the arm-scyes and terminating in Specification of Letters Itatent.

an unstayed portionof the fabric, so that the elasticity of the garment across the chest is not diminished. There is a neck binding extending from one slit around the edge of the neck opening to the other slit, and another portion of the neck binding extending from one slit to the other along the front. The two slits are each preferably closed by two buttons, one of which is at the neck binding and the other of which is intermediate the neck binding and the lower end of the slit. By this arrangement the neck binding is completely closed, the slits will not gape, and it is possible to use only four buttons, thus eifecting economy in manufacture. All four buttons are located at the front of the garment in positions where they are conveniently reached by the wearer. The entrance opening is ample, so that the garment is readily put on and taken off. The parts lie smoothly and there is no uncomfortable bunch formed at any point. The invention will be fully understood from the following description when taken in connection'with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be pointed out and clearly defined in the claims at the close of this specification.

In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a garment embodying my invention.

Fig. 2 shows the same garment with the flap unbuttoned and turned down.

Referring now to the drawings, at 11 is shown the body of the garment preferably made from tubular knit fabric with the wale running up and down the garment so that the garment is elastic laterally; at 12 and 13 are shown the arm-scyes; at 14: and 15 are shown the shoulder seams, and at 16 the neck opening. The front median line of the garment is indicated by a dot and dash line marked 17. The tubular body fabric is slit along the lines 18 and 19 which extend from the neck opening 16 at a point somewhat to one side of the median line 17 to a point between the said median line 17 and the lower end of the arm-scyes. These openings terminate in an unstayed portion of the fabric. The openings are finished in any suitable manner preferably by the addition of button flies 20 and 21, so that the flap 22 will overlap the adjacent portion of the garment. The back of the flap 22 is also preferably faced along the edges to provide buttonhole stays. It will be seen that both side edges of the flap 22 overlie the adjacent portion of the garment.

Theneck opening 16"is finished in some suitable way, as for instance with a binding 23 which extends from the opening 19 around the back of the neck to the opening 18, and the top edge of the flap 22 is likewise finished, as for instance with a binding 24. At 26, 27, 28 and 29 are shown four buttons or other suitable fasteners two of which, 27 and 29, are located on the neck binding adjacent the upper ends of the slits 18 and 19. It will be understood that these cooperate with suitable fastening elements, such for instance as buttonholes. This construction provides a perfect closure all the way around the neck opening and along both slits. The garment readily adapts itself to the figure of the wearer and does not bind.

What I claim is; l 1. An undergarment made from tubular knit fabric, having a neck opening and having two diverging straight line slits which extend from the neck opening downward on the front of the garment, and terminate respectively at dead ends in the body of the garment at points between the median line of the garment and the arm-scyes, the top ends of said slits being at av distance from each other, forming a drop flap, whose up per edge is curved to complement the rest of the neck opening in the body, flies attached to the body along the side edges of the slits and forming under laps for the garment at points between the median line of the garment and the arm-scyes, the top ends of said slits being at a distance from each other, forming a drop flap, flies attached to the body portion along the side edges of the slits and formingextensions which are overlapped by the said flap when the flap is closed, a neck binding which extends around the neck opening in the body of the garment and across the upper ends of said flies to the free edges thereof, a neck band for the upper end of said flap which laps onto the neck band of the body portion, and fastening devices for detachably uniting together the ends of the neck band of the flap with the ends of the neck band of the body, and for uniting the sides of the fiap with the said flies.
