JOSEPH O. REED, OF VASHINGTC, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF FORTY-NINE ONE-IIUNDREDTI-IS TO ALFRED A. SMITH, OF SAME PLACE.
WASHBO'ARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lett-ers Patent No. 575,274, dated January 12, 1897. Application filed April 8, 1396. Serial No. 586,748. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern.'
Beit known that I, JOSEPH C. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vashington, in the Districtof Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TNasliboards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This inventionV relates to an improvement in washboards; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and definitely pointed out in the claims.
The aim and purpose of the invention is the provision of means applied to the legs of a washboard whereby the board is held from moving up and down while being used and so held without the necessity of socket clips or clamps secured to the tub, but solely by the devices carried by and forming a part of the board.
The objects are attained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference designate corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure l is an elevation of the board in position in a tub, the latter being shown in section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the lower end of one of the legs of the board, showing the attachment; and Fig. Sis a detail section of a modified form of fastener.
In the present form of my invention I have shown a convenient form of device by which the objects desired are attained, which de vice consists of suckers A, of rubber or any suitable material, secured to the lower ends of the legs. These suckers are formed with a strengthened or thick crown a and tapered edges a', and they are secured to the legs B by a screw C, passing centrally therethrough, a washer being interposed. The upper end of the screw takes into or is connected in any suitable manner to the shank D, which is flat and has an eye in its upper end. The shank is located in the kerf or groove E in the lower end of the leg, and
is held therein by a pin e passing through 5o the eye of the shank. The lower ends of the legs are rounded, so that as the board is reversed they will assume the proper angle to the top of the sucker, the point of pivotal movement being at the eye of the shank. To 5 5 prevent the over-movement of the shank, pins F F are passed through the legs at points below and on opposite sides of the pivot-pin and across the kerf. By this means the shank engages the pins F F', and is thereby 6o limited in its movement, while the suckers maintain their hold on the bottom of the tub.
In adjusting the board the suckers are pressed down by pressing down on the board,
the tapered edges being forced out as they and upon each down movement of the board 7o the tendency is to reseat that much of the sucker which has been liftedby the up move* ment on the face of the board.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a fiat-faced sucker reinforced by a metal plate G, so that the edges will be forced out by the direct pressure in a manner similar to the enlarged or thickened form of sucker shown in Fig. 2.
lVhile I have shown a sucker for the securing means, yet I believe I am the first So to ever apply holdingmeans to a board which did not require a fixture attached to the tub to cooperate therewith.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 8 5 Patent, isj 1.A A washboard having suckers secured on the ends of the legs thereof, substantially as described.
2. A washboard having suckers pivotally 9o secured on the ends of the legs thereof, substantially as described.
3. A washboard, having legs, suckers at the ends of the legs, andaconnection between the suckers and legs comprising Shanks pivotally connected with the legs, and connected to the suckers, substantially as described.
4. The combination with the washboard and its legs, of suckers having strengthened In testimony whereof I affix my signature upper portions, and means for connecting the in presence of two Witnesses. suckers to the lower edges of the legs, substantially as described. JOSEPH O. REED.
5. The combination with a washboard, of Vitnesses: suckers thereon for securing the board in Jos. H. MILANS,
any desired position in the tub. e L. S. BACON.
