Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. DODDS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Chester, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tie Pressers and Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a presser and stretcher, and more particularly to the class of tie pressers and stretchers.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein one or any number of ties can be placed therein 7 for the successful pressing and stretching thereof so that all creases and wrinkles will be removed from the same after being worn.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a tie presscr and stretcher wherein the ties can be conveniently placed therein with despatch and the said ties will be automatically stretched for the pressing of the same.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the pressing spring is mounted in a novel manner upon the base for positive action upon a tie or ties when placed in the clamps, which are also novel in form to prevent slipping of the ties and to allow the convenient placing therein of and the removal of the same from the device.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and eflicient in operation, strong, durable and inexpensive in manufacture.

Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out. I

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims hereunto appended.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device con structed in accordance with the invention with a tie clamped therein; Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates a flat base preferably made'of wood, and 1s 1n this instance of rectangular shape, yet the shape may be varied should the occasion require.

Upon the base A, centrally thereof, is mounted an upwardly archedleaf spring 10 which maybe of any desirable width and is substantially the length of the base, having one straight end 11 through which is passed a bolt member 12, which serves to secure the spring to the base, the bolt member being passed through the latter, while the other end of the said spring 10 is free to slide through a diagonally disposed slot 13 formed in the base A so that the spring 10 can be flexed for the flattening thereof against the tension of the same, for a purpose presently described.

Located at each end of the spring 10 on the base A is a pair of members, each pair being made up of members 1 1 and 15 on opposite sides of said spring. The members 11 are of considerably less height than the members 15. The members 15 each have wingingly connected to one limb thereof a vertically adjustable clamping block 16 formed with a rounded edge 17 which, to-

gether with the bottom face thereof, are

provided with a felt coverlng 18 servlng to prevent the slipping of ties when clamped by the blocks 16 in a manner presently described. The blocks at their pivoted ends are formed with notches 19 which serve to prevent the swinging of the blocks in one direction, that is to say, in an inward direction, while the said blocks are free to swing outwardly. Swingingly connected to the short members 14 are U-shaped bales or keeper members 20, while swingin'gly connected to the longer members 15 are downwardly arched spring clips 21, the free ends of which are adapted to be engaged in the bolts or clips 20 for the locking of the blocks 16 in clamping position, the spring clips 21 being designed to serve as tension devices upon the blocks so that when the ends of the ties are engaged thereby, after being superimposed over the spring 10, the said ties will be firmly clamped and prevented from slipping, the felt covering 18 being also designed to assist in preventing slipping of the ends of the ties from beneath the blocks.

16 are freed and swung outwardly, whereupon the ties are laid upon the spring 10, which is depressed in the direction of the base A, and thereafter the blocks 16 are swung inwardly and the clips 21' engaged with the members 20, thereby firmly clamping the ends of the ties when stretched over the spring 10, which is released from its depressed position, thereby exerting a pressing action upon the ties for removing the creases and wrinkles therefrom. It is of course understood that the device can be used as a pants presser or the like.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and manner of use of the invention will be thoroughly understood, and a more extended explanation has, therefore, been omitted.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A device of the class described comprising a base, a distorted leaf spring supported upon the base and capable of freely flexing, and clamps carried by the base and arranged beyond the distorted portion of said spring.

A device of the class described comprising a base, a distorted leaf spring supported upon the base and capable of freely flexing, clamps carried by the base and arranged beyond the distorted portion of said spring, tension means for the said clamps and also serving as releasing devices therefor, a straight portion on the distorted spring, and means for securing the straight portion to the base.

4. A device of the class described comprising a base, a distorted leaf spring supported upon the base and capable of freely flexing, clamps carried by the base and arranged beyond the distorted portion of said spring, tension means for the said clamps and serving as releasing devices therefor, 21 straight portion on the distorted spring, means for securing the straight portion to the base, and means for limiting the swing ing of the clamps in one direction and also permitting vertical adjustment thereof.
