ARM-REST.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,797, dated January 5, 1897.

Be it known that I, CHARLES S. GILMAN, of the city of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Arm-Rests, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to arm-rests designed particularly for the use of bookkeepers while making an entry in the books; and the object I have in view is to provide a very simple inexpensive device which can be adjusted for use on books of different size and can be readily adjusted for use on either side of the open book.

Tothis end my invention consists generally in providing a telescoping tube having a hooked end to engage the end of the book and provided at its opposite end with a pivoted plate havinga projection to bear upon the surface of the leaf on which it is desired to make the entry, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective of an open book with my invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rest. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the telescoping tube.

3 is a tube of brass or other suitable material, having a hooked end 4 to engage the farther end of the book and prevent the rest from slipping out of position. The other end of the tube 3 slides within a larger tube 5, which is slotted at the end to permit its being compressed to fit snugly about the end of the tube 3 and prevent the same from sliding The friction between the slotted end of the outer tube 5 and the tube 3 is only sufiicient to hold the latter in position and does not prevent the tube 3 from being pushed into the tube 5 or drawn out, according to the size of the book on which it is desired to use the rest. The opposite end of the tube 5 is provided with a loop or band 6,which passes around the same and has 2 represents an ordinary its ends secured upon opposite sides of aplate or board 7, which extends from the middle of the book out toward the edges thereof and upon a level with the surface of the leaves. The loop or band 6 is held in position on the tube 5 by a cap 8, providedon the end of the tube, and by a collar 9, arranged on the tube just inside the inner end of the loop or band.

The plate or board 7 is provided near its outer edge with a projection 10, having one end inserted into the edge of the board and its opposite end resting upon the surface of the leaf.

The device may be used on the left-hand side of the book by simply swinging the plate 7 over to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and by means of the telescoping tubes is adapted for use on a book of any size.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent v 1. An arm rest, comprising telescoping tubes to rest upon the surface of the book, means for holding the same in position, and a board or rest provided on the end of one of said tubes, and forming a continuation of the leaf of the book, substantially as described.

2. An arm rest, comprising telescoping tubes adapted to rest upon the surface of the book, means for holding the same in position, and a pivoted plate or board provided on the end of one of said telescoping tubes, and forming a continuation of the leaf of the book, substantially as described.

3. An arm rest, comprising telescoping tubes adapted to rest upon the surface of the book, means for holding the same in position, a pivoted plate or board provided on the end of said telescoping tubes, and adapted to be turned to form a continuation of either the right or left hand page of the book, and said plate being provided with a lug or projection to rest upon the surface of the leaf, for the purpose set forth.

4. An arm-rest, comprising a tube 3 having a hooked end to engage the end of the book, a second tube within which said tube 3 is adapted to slide, said second tube having a slotted end whereby it may be compressed about said first-named tube, and provided at its opposite end with a pivoted board, means for holding the same in position on said tube, and said plate or board being provided on its inner edge with a projection to rest upon the surface of either side of the book, substantially as described.
