TICKET-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,550, dated January 5, 1897'. Application filed May 10, 1894. Serial No. 510,736. (N model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. LODGE, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ticket-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in holders for displaying tickets, cards, or signs on counters, shelves, and other places in proximity to the goods to which such tickets, cards, or signsret'er; and the object of my invention is to provide said holders with gripping devices for retaining the ticket or other article so as to be readily removable therefrom, and to render said gripping deviceseither a part or all of them-adjustable in respect to each other or in respect to the base of the standard on which they are placed. This object I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which are herein referred to and form part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of one form of my ticket-holder having its standard formed of wire; Fig. 2, an enlarged and detached vertical section of one of the gripping devices; Fig. 3, a horizontal section of Fig. 1 at the line X X. Figs. 4 and are detached details illustrating ditferent arrangements of the adjustable gripping devices. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of my ticket-holder having a base and standard made either entirely or partially of wood or metal. Fig. 7 is a horizontal section of Fig. 6 at the line Y Y. Fig. Sis a side elevation of another modification of my ticket-holder, and Fig. 0 is a horizontal section of the same at the line Z Z.
As represented in the drawings, Figs. 1 to 5, A designates the standard of my ticket-holder when made of wire, the same consisting of a horizontal base 1, which may be made in any suitable or preferred form, but preferably of such a form as will be adapted to allow a bundle, box, or package of goods to bear thereon to hold the ticket-holder in place. A slide 2 is arranged perpendicularly to the plane of the base 1 and is preferably formed by two parallel parts of wire from which said base is formed, and preferably said base and slide are integral.

The upper end of said slide has a clamp or band 4, provided with a gripper mechanism 5, whose arm will be retained in a closed position against the slide 2 by a spring (5 or other suitable means commonly used for such purposes.
The band 4 can either be retained in a fixed position, as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be made adjustable on said slide, as indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 4: and 5, and in the latter case an independent band 7 is secured to the upper end of the slide 2 for the purpose of preserving the parallelism of the two rods of said slide. A lower band 8, which is also provided with a gripper mechanism 9, like the one above described, can be permanently secured in a fixed place, as shown in Fig. 4, or
can be adjustable on the slide 2, as shown in Fig. 5. In Fig. 4 the gripper mechanism 5 is adj nstable in respect to the gripper mechanism 9, as indicated by the arrows on said figure, but in Fig. 5 both of the gripper mechanisms are adjustable in respect to each other, as indicated by the arrows on the last-named figure.
v In the modification of my invention shown in Figs. 6 an 1 7 the base 10 may be a wooden or metal plate, and to said base there is attached, by any suitable means, a slide 11, arranged in a perpendicular position in respect to said base. Bands 12 are arranged to clasp said slide, as shown in Fig. 7, and each of said bands is provided with a gripper mechanism 13, like the similar devices previously referred to, and either one of said bands, or both of them, with its gripper mechanism, can be made adjustable on said slide.
In the modification of my invention shown in Figs. Sand 9 the base 14 may be made of wire, as shown in Fig. 8, or of a plate of metal or wood. One or more tubes 15 are erected on said base, but preferably two of said tubes are erected thereon, and on the outer side of said tubes a band 1b is fitted to slide. Said band is provided with a gripper mechanism 17, like the similar devices hereinbefore described, and preferably one of said gripper mechanisms is arranged on the opposite sides of said tubes in such manner that its arm will bear against the tubes 15. Into the tubes 15 a wire or bar 18 is fitted to slide telescopically, and when a pair of tubes are employed said wire should be bent into the form of an inverted letter U, so that the two limbs will slide telescopically in the respective tubes. The sliding wires 18 are provided with a gripper mechanism 19 or with a pair of the same, and said gripper mechanisms may be made in the form shown in the drawings or in any other suitable form that may be preferred.
My invention is operated in the following manner: The standard A is arranged on a counter, shelf, or other suitable place where the base can have a bearing, and preferably goods in boxes, bales, or other packages are placed on said base for the purpose of retaining the standard in its place. A ticket, card, or sign, which may call attention to the particular goods lying adjacently to the ticketholder, is fixed in the gripper mechanisms, both upper and lower ones, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The adjust-ability of the gripper mechanisms adapts my ticketholder for receiving tickets, &c., of various sizes, and when both of the gripper mechanisms are adjustable the ticket can be arranged atany preferred height within the scope of the standard of the device.
It is important in my invention that the upright be prolonged in cross-section, forming what may be termec opposite plane-like surfaces, against which the sign may be gripped in such manner as to prevent it from wabbling. I also provide in connection with this form of upright a binding gripper or grippers whose binding edge coincides with the plane of prolongation of the upright in such manner as to insure the holding of the card or sign tightly against the plane-like surface of the upright to prevent it from wabbling. It is also preferred to provide a plurality of grippers on the upright and to ar range the adjacent grippers reversely, as shown in Fig. 1, so one may grip the upper edge and the other the lower edge of the sign. This construction and arrangement cooperates with the particular construction of the upright in securing a firm fastening of the sign, inasmuch as the upper and lower grippers prevent any vertical tilting of the sign, and they both aid in preventing any lateral wabbling of such sign, as will be readily understood from Fig. 1. It will also be noticed that the single form of gripper shown in Fig. 1 and also in Fig. 6 may be slipped off the upper end of the upright and reversed, so as to bind a sign on the opposite side of the up right. By such construction two grippers may be arranged to bind a sign against one side of the upright and two others to bind another sign against the opposite side of the upright; but it may be preferred, where this opposite showing of signs is desired, to employ the double form of gripper shown in Fig. 8.

A sign-holder comprising a base and upright bent from a length of wire, the upright consisting of parallel strands of wire forming plane-like surfaces against which the sign or signs may be pressed and a slide or slides movable along said upright and having grippers by which to bind the sign or signs thereto, substantially as shown and described.
