FASTENING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,754, dated December 22, 1896.

Application filed May 2'7, 1896- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. BECHTOLD, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a speci fication. Y

My invention has reference to a fastening device which may be readily attached by means of projecting prongs and used for holding or suspending articles, such as spectacles, bouquets, napkins, neckties, &c.

The object of my present invention is to provide a simple device which can be cheaply manufactured and which will remain tightly attached when applied, while at the same time it can be readily removed when its removal is desired.

To this end my invention consists, essentially, in a fastener composed of awire loop provided with reentrant members terminating in lateral prongs, which latter are adapted to be inserted into the fabric and lie wholly within the body of the loop.

The nature of my invention will best be understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents aface view of a fastener adapted for use as a bouquet-holder. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view. Fig. 4 is a section on the line I 4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a face View of a modified form. Fig. 6 is a side view. Fig. 7 is a top View. Referring at present to Figs. 1 to l, the letter a designates the fastener, which is composed of a loop made of spring-wire and having reentrant members 1 l, which terminate in laterally-extending prongs 2 2. The loop may be circular, elliptical, or polygonal in form. To facilitate the insertion into and the removal of the prongs from the fabric, the two Serial No. 593.202. (No model.)

terminal members 1 1 of the loop may be arranged in different planes, as shown in Fig. 4, so that on the compression of the loop by hand the prongs are moved over each other. If when in this condition of the fastener the prongs are pressed against the fabric and the loop released, the prongs enter the fabric and hold the fastener. It will be noticed that the pron gs are also inclined in planes forming angles with the plane of the loop, so that on the expansion of the loop they pass at an angle through the fabric. The fastener may also be applied by first inserting one prong into the fabric, then compressing the loop and permitting the same to again extend, whereupon the second prong will pass through the fabric.

In Fig. 8 I have shown a bouquet-holder formed with an open loop a and with members l 1, bent outwardly and inwardly to form auxiliary loops 4 4, which will permit the loop a to be swung outwardly and inwardly with slight pressure, so as to facilitate the introduction of the bouquet or other object into the loop.

In Figs. 9 to 12 I have shown the lower portion of theloop extended downwardly, outwardly, and upwardly to form a hook 5, which enables the fastener to be used as a spectacleholder or the like.

It is evident that the device can be used as a neckwear-retainer and for many other purposes not herein described. Therefore I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise constructions shown, the essential feature of my invention being the rent-rant members of the loop, which terminate in lateral prongs all lying within the loop. It is also evident that the device may be stamped up from sheet metal.

\Vhat I claim as new is 1'. A fastening device composed of a loop having rentrant members terminating in laterally-extendin g prongs lying wholly within the body of the loop, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
