To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ZEPHANIAH A. BAE- RETT,a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of

which the following is a specication.

My invention relates to certain improvements in boxes; and it consists in constructing a box containing novel features, which will be fully described in this specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention is fully illustrated in the drawings presented herewith, in which- Figure l is a perspective of my improved box. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof. Fig. 3 is an under plan of the cover. Fig. et is an end elevation of the box, looking in the direction of the arrow fc in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a vertical diametrical section in line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a cross-section in line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a central vertical section of the box and cover, the box being shown in an inverted position and the cover partially withdrawn; and Fig. S is a horizontal section in line 8 8 of Fig. a.

As shown in the drawings, the box is constructed of suitable material formed into the side, end, and bottom pieces and a removable cover secured thereto. The sides and ends are constructed of a strip of metal folded at the proper places to form a rectangular frame, the ends being preferablT connected in the manner shown. -The ends a b overlap slightly, and the end a is provided with a tongue a', which is passed through a corresponding slot b in the end b and then clamped back against the portion h, as seen in Fig. 8. The upper and lower edges of the sides A B are bent outward and then back again, thus leaving grooves ai a b2 b3, (see Fig. 0,) in which are slipped the cover C and the bottom piece D. The bottom D is a little longer than the box itself, and the projecting edges are bent upward and crowded against the ends of the box, thus securing the bottom in place and preventing it from any accidental misplacement. The rear end of the cover is bent downward at c, (see Figs. 5 and 7,) which forms a stop for the cover when it is in a closed position. The cover is stamped up near one end, as seen in Figs. 5 and 6, forming a socket C', in which is secured a catch or locking device, which prevents the cover from being removed except when the box is held in a certain position. As shown in the drawings, this catch consists of a wire e, pivotally secured in the socket C' and having its ends e e2 bent at right angles to the pivotal portion e and extending in opposite directions from each other. The end e is considerably shorter than the portion e2, its purpose being simply to form a stop to prevent the longer portion from falling below a certain point. The ends are not in the same plane, that is, the plane which intersects the pivotal line, b ut, as seen in Fig. 5, they are arranged so that when the end e' strikes the top of the socket C' the long end e2 will lie below the top of the end piece B and strike the same should an attempt be made to remove the cover when the box is in the position shown in Figs. 1, 5, and 6.

To remove the cover, it is necessary to invert the box, (see Fig. 7,) when the longer arm e2 falls down into the socket and lies below the upper face of the cover and out of the way of the end piece B', thus permitting the cover to be withdrawn.

The objects for which this box maybe used are of course very numerous, and it may to a great extent be used for certain advertising purposes, suitable inscriptions being placed upon the sides and cover.
