UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J OHAN HENRIK SALOMON JOHNSON, OF STOOKHOLM, SWEDEN.
BOX-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 702,798, dated dune 1'7, 1902.
Application filed March 17, 1902. Serial No. 98,675. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHAN HENRIK SALOMON JOHNSON, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Stockholm, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to fasteners for boxes or cases used in the transportation of bottles and the like, and has for its object to provide means for facilitating the opening and closing of said boxes without resorting to violent means, thereby avoiding shocks or jolts which may act deleteriously on the contents, and, further, to provide means whereby the fastener may be sealed by means of a lead seal or the like or may be locked by means of an ordinary padlock, which is of great advantage in many instances.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1, 2, and 3 show a front, side, and top view, respectively, of the fastener; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the case when fastened.
One edge of the lid of the transport-case g, Fig. 4, is inserted under two hooks or latches h, fixed on the edge of the case. On the opp0 site edge of the lid a means of fastening is arranged, which consists of a pivotally-mounted hasp. This, as may be seen in the drawings, is made of spring-wire, which forms two arms 2, the free ends of which are provided with loops 76, which may be easily grasped and pressed together. A little lower down on the outside of the case a catch Z is fixed, from the opposite edges of which two ears or lugs project, which are bent at first inward and then at an angle outward. After the arms '1; have been pressed together in the manner hereinbefore mentioned they may be inserted between the said lugs m, and when the arms are then released they separate, by reason of their springiness, and pass under the inwardly-bent parts of the lugs m. The loops 70 being below these lugs prevent the opening of the lid g. In order to prevent the arms thus inserted in the clasp from being accidentally compressed, a tongue '17. is pivotally mounted on the lower edge of the fastener or clasp Z, which tongue rises, in the manner shown in the drawings, between the arms e', and thus prevents their being pressed together. In addition to the said tongue the hasp of a padlock ora cord, steel wire, or the like may then be passed through openings 0 in the lugs m, the ends of which cord when brought together may then be sealed by means of a lead seal or the like. The edge of the lid which is pushed under the hooks h may of course be also provided with a lug, in which case the hooks it may be dispensed with.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- In a fastening device, the combination with a pivoted hasp composed of two spring-arms having loops formed on their free ends, of a catch formed with a base-platev having ears bent inwardly and then outwardly at an angle to the base and adapted to receive both arms of the hasp above the loops, and a tongue hinged to said base-plate adapted to be proj ected in the horizontal plane of the arms of the hasp, for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHAN HENRIK SALOMON JOHNSON.
WVitnesses L. KALLENBERG, A. NoRDBLoM.
