SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 57 3,123, dated December 15, 1896. Application filed January 20, 1896. Serial No. 576,157. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM ALBERs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allcgheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to cert-ain new and useful improvements in envelops in general, and relates particularly to that class known as safety envelops,which cannot be open ed without detection.

The invention has for its object the construction of an envelop of the above-described class wherein new and novel means are employed for preventing the opening of the envelop and securing a greater degree of safety in the sending of money, checks, and other valuables.

Afurther object of the invention is to construct an envelop as above referred to that will be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable, effectual in its operation, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, inasmuch as it can be manufactured as easily as the ordinary envelop, and there will not be as much waste paper as in the forming of the envelop principally used.

With the above and other objects in view the invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification ,and wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views,in whichn Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved envelop before being folded. Fig. 2 is asimilar view with the flaps or Wings folded. Figs. 3, et, and G are views of my improved envelop, showing manner of folding. Fig. 5 is a view of a portion of the envelop and the reverse side of the tongue from that shown in the other views. Fig.7 is asectional view taken through the envelop after it is sealed.

In the drawings, a represents the front portion of the envelop, and Z9 the back portion of the same. On the back portion b is provided wings or flaps c c, and the front portion ct is provided with a flap CZ on each end and is also provided with a flap e of the same shape as the tongue f provided on the back portion. A slot g is provided in the flap e, and the tongue is provided with V-shaped slots h h. The tongue f is gummed on one side to the base of these slots 7L h and is gummed over its entire surface ou the reverse side, and the tongue e is gulnmed from the base of the front portion d to the slot g, and the iiaps d CZ are gummed on the same side as the flap e.

The manner of forming my improved e11- velop will be readily apparent from the views of the same which I have shown in the drawings.

The flaps c c are first folded, and as the one laps slightly7 over the other the two will adhere together, and the side which is uppermost when thus folded is gumrned, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The envelop is then doubled, and the inner face of the front portion d will adhere to the gummed portion of the flaps c c, when the :aps d CZ are folded over and adhere to the back portion. The tongue or iiap e is then folded down into the envelop, and the gummed portion of this tongue will adhere to the flaps c o, when the envelop is then ready to receive its contents.

Then the envelop has received its contents, the tongue f is folded down and inserted in the slot g, and the portion gummed between the slots l1. 7i will adhere to the flap e on the one side, While the other side of the tongue f, being gummed over its entire surface, will adhere to the tongue or iiap c on the reverse side and effectually seal the envelop. When the envelop is thus sealed, it will be noted that the side of the tongue fwhich is inside of the iiap c will be impervious to steam or any of the other methods ordinarily employed for opening envelops, as there will be two thicknesses of paper between this side of the envelop and the outer side, thus preventing the steam from reaching the same. Should any one tamper with the envelop, attempting to withdraw the tongue, the slots 7?, h will serve to allow the same to tear readily and showing that the same has been tampered with but their primary object is to allow the upper portion of the tongue f to enter thc slot. By this consti-notion it will be noted that it will be impossible to open the envelop without defacing or destroying the same, and another advantage which may be inentioned, is the comparativelysmooth back that is derived from this construction, enabling the use of the baek for an advertisement, if desired.

It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction of my improved envelop without departing from the general spirit of my invention.

IIavin g fully described my invention, what I Claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In an envelop consisting of the front and baek portions, the back portion being provided with wings or flaps gummed on one side, the front portion being provided with flaps gummed on the reverse side, and having a flap partially gunimed and provided with a slot extending longitudinally in alinement therewith, substantially as shown and described.

2. In an envelop, the back portion thereof having wings arranged on its ends and a tongue at the top, said tongue having V- shaped slots and being gunnned on one side to the base of the said slots, and on the other side over the entire surface, substantially as shown and described.

3. In an envelop, the combination of the front and back portions, the baek portion being provided with wings gumnied on one side, and a tongue gunnned on one side, and partially gummed on the other, said tongue being provided with V-shaped slots, the front portion being provided with flaps adapted to fold over the back portion, and having a iiap partially gunnned on one side and a slot in said Hap, all parts being arranged, substantially as shown and described.
