Description
(R oModeL). f
. A. KNIPPENBERG.
GROGHET HOOK.
1m 572,809.". Patented Dec. 8, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST KNIPPENBERG, OF FEHTERSHAUSEN, GERMANY.
CROCHET-HOQK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,809, dated December 8, 1896.
Application filed November 29, 1895. Serial No. 570,554- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST KNIPPENBERG, manufacturer, a subject of the Duke of Sam- Coburg-Gotha, residing at Fehtershausen, in the Duchy of SaXe-Ooburg-Gotha and German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Crochet-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in crochet-hooks, and has for its obj ectto facilitate crochet-working by fixing the position of the hook of the implement relatively to the position of the fingers.
It is well known that one of the chief difficulties in learning crochet-working, and one which continually requires the strictest attention and necessitates straining the eyes, is caused by the placing of the crochet-hook handle (which is usually round) relatively to the mesh or stitch, that is to say, the position of the hook relatively to the mesh or stitch.
Now my inyention has for its object to in sure the proper position of the hook in crochetworking, without any attention, automatically by means of the shape of the handle, thereby facilitating the labor of crochet-working and rendering unnecessary the straining of the eyes otherwise required; also to diminish by simple means the difliculties in learning crochet-working. These objects are effected according to my invention by arranging or forming on the crochet-hook handle a fiat surface or enlargement situated at right angles to the hook, so that a careful attention to the position of the hook is no longer necessary, because in using the crochet-hook the hook assumes automatically the proper position for working, as the surfaces place themselves against the fingers.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings illustrates in plan a crochet-hook with the enlarged surface. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
The handle or shank a of the crochet-hook may be of smooth or of diversified cross-sectional form and be provided with or Without a wooden handle. It is formed at the place where the finger-tips are situated in crochetworking with an enlargement or flat portion b,.which allows of the fingers being placed thereon. This flattened or enlarged portion 19 is situated at right angles to the hook 0, so
that the place A B in which the hook is situated is at right angles to the shank a. The surface a may be of flat or convex or rounded shape.
Having now particularly described and. ascertained the nature of my invention, what I claim, and wish to protect by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. An integral crochet-hook, comprising a shank, a hook at the end thereof, and a fiattened portion 19 therein, as and for the purpose described.
2. An article of manufacture, comprising an integral crochet-hook of wire having a hook, a shank, and a flattened portion bin the said shank.
In testimony whereof I'have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
AUGUST KNIPPENBERG.
