Be it known that we, FREDERICK G. BRAD- BURY, of St. Paul, Ramsey county, and NILs NILsON, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Book-Files, of which the following is a specication.

Our invention relates to improvements in Y book-iiles, its object being to provide a file Vand the locking means, or the entire cover,

including the locking means, may be lifted 'to allow the insertion or removal of the papers.

Our invention further consists in the speciic construction and combination hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, Figure 1 is a partial plan view of our improved le. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is adetail of the reinforcement for the back of the file. Fig. 4 is a detail of the puncturing and locking means, the attached parts being shown in sections. Fig. 5 is a detail of the puncturing-stud shown attached to the le. Fig. 6 is a view of a portion of a sheet of paper, illustrating the opening made by the puncturing-stud. Fig. 7 is a detail of a modiiied form of puncturing and locking means, the file being shown in section; and Fig. 8 illustrates the form of locking-socket shown in Fig. 7.

. the back and bottom of the file, and are secured thereto by the inturned ends 5 or in any other suitable manner. The lid or cover is formed in two parts 6 and 7, the section 6 being connected byahingeS with the back 2 of the file, the said sections 6 and 7 havinga hinge connection 9.

Secured to the reinforcing-strip 4 and the adjacent portion of the file bottom are the puncturing-studs 10. shown in Figs. 4 and 5 these studs are formed with two similar spring-jaws 11, each provided With a pointed slightly-curved head 12. The section 6 of the file above each of the puncturing-studs is provided with a receiving-socket 13.

The socket is inwardly enlarged, so as to receive and hold the heads of the spring-jaws 11. With the use of this form the heads 12 puncture the paper in the manner illustrated in Fig. 6.

Whenever it is desired to refer to the slips without removing them, the cover may be turned back upon its hinge 9, as shown by dot-and-dash lines in Fig. 2, or if it be desired to remove the slips the puncturingstuds and receiving-socket may be forced apart and the cover turned back upon its hinge S.

We claim 1. In a book-nie of the class described, the combination with the covers thereof, ofthe paper-holding attachments upon one, and the automatic locking devices upon the other adapted by the closing of the covers to engage said attachments, so as to retain the papers thereon.

2. In a book-ile of the class described, the

combination with its covers, of the paper puncturing an d holding attachments carried by one cover, and the automatic locking devices carried by the other cover, adapted to engage said puncturing attachments by the closing of the covers.

3. As an improved article of manufacture, a book-file of the class described, comprising in combination, the bottom cover, the back rigidly connected thereto, the two-part upper cover having hinged connection and also hinged to said back, the puncturing-studs upon the bottom cover, and the sockets carried by the rear section of the upper cover, adapted to automatically engage said studs by the closing of the covers so as to lock the same to said upper cover.

4. As an improved article of manufacture, a book-file of the class described, having puncturing-studs upon one cover, and automatic locking-sockets for said studs upon the other cover, the hinge connecting said covers, and a hinge in said second cover intermediate of said sockets and its free end.

5. In a device of the class described, a

puncturing-stud made up of a plurality of standards with concave cuttinglips constituting a sectional hollow punch.

6. In a device of the class described, a puncturing-stud made up of a plurality of standards having concave cutting-lips, constituting sections of a hollow punch, and a locking-socket adapted to engage said stud so as to retain papers arranged thereon.

7. In a iile of the class described, in combination, the covers hinged to each other, the puncturing-stud upon one, the socket carried by the other, and adapted by the closing of the covers to cause an interposed sheet to be impaled upon the stud, the socket interlocking with said stud to hold said covers closed and retain said sheet upon said stud.
