Description

s. E. ANDEEs, 0E TROY, NEW YORK.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ERASER AND BURNISHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,273, dated August 21, 1866; antedated June 30, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, S. R. ANDRES, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Eraser; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the artto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a front View of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the plane of the line rc x, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a modi- Vlication of my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention 'consists in the combination, with a piece of rubber or erasive material, of a brush, both being set in a suitable frame or holder, and so arranged that after the rubber or erasive material has performed its function as an eraser the brush will clear from the paper all the small particles which are incident upon the use of the article as an erasing medium. l
A designates a holder, in which I propose to set the rubber and brush. This may be made of any suitable material and of any desired shape. B designates the rubber, and C the brush.
In the example shown in Figs. l and 2 the rubber is set at a short distance from the brush, andin Fig. 3 the rubber is set up close to the brush7 so as to be immediately behind the rubber; but the brush C and rubber B maybe secured in the frame in any suitable manner, so long as the desired end is gained.
It is well known that in using rubber, whether it be the kind intended for erasing pencil-marks or the kind used for erasing inkmarks, numerous chips or crumblings from the same are left upon the paper, and it is usual to brush them off with the hand before commencing to draw or write again, and often many motions of the hand are necessary to effectually clean the paper', but with my device this can be done almost simultaneously with the erasing of the pencil-marks or of the writing, the brush in each case following the rubber and sweeping the paper clean by the same motion which is required for using the rubber. The paper is thus left perfectly clean, and the writing or drawing can be im mediately recolnmenced without further manipulations.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a piece of rubber or other erasive material, B, with a brush, C, both set in a suitable frame, A, and arranged in a manner to accomplish the purpose of my invention, substantially as herein specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 27th day of March, 1866.
S. R. ANDRES.
