ITENVIS' \VOLFF, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
ERASER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,889, dated October 16, 1883. Application filed February .28, 1883. (No model.) Patented in England November 20, 1882, No. 5,515.
To all? whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, Lnwrs WOLFE, of London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Erasing Pencil, Ink, or other Marks, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 5,515, bearing date November 20, 1882,) of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to devices for erasing pencil, ink, and other marks from paper or other material, and comprises a case or holder so constructed that when not in use the erasing material can be folded within the same, and be thereby kept clean when carried in the pocket.
The particular construction of my pocketeraser will be fully hereinafter described in detail, and the improvements pointed out in the claims. p
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of an erasing device constructed according to this invention, and showing one piece of the erasing material. open and ready for use. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
' Fig. 3 is aside view, illustrating a modification of my invention. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same.
According to the said invention, the case or holder consists of two thin fiat pieces of wood or other suitable material, a a, preferably of oblong form, although, other forms may be used. Between these side pieces, a a, I place at one end a tablet of india-rubber, b, and at the other end a tablet of ink-eraser, c, (which is india-rubber incorporatedwith glass powder or other suitable cutting material;) or both ends may be provided with the same material. In each end of the case, passing through the two sides thereof and the erasing material, I fix a rivet or screw, (2, thereby securing the erasing material between the two sides of the holder, but leaving each tablet free to turn upon its pivot. The holder is also provided with notches c e on its edges, to enable a person easily to take hold of the erasing material and withdraw it from the said holder. The two pieces b 0 of erasing material which are held by the pivots are cut flush with the ends of the ease, to give the device a neat appearance. The
' free ends are inclined, as shown in Fig. 1, so
that when not in use they can be folded between the two sides of the holder without waste of room, .(which would be the case if the ends were square,) and be thereby protected from dirt; also the pointed form thus given to the erasing material facilitates its use. I some timesarrange pins or other suitable stops, f,
in the holder in order to support the erasing materialand prevent it from turning round when open and in use. 7
In a modification of this invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the holder is adapted to hold one kind of erasing material 9 only, pivoted at d, in which case the two sides a a of the said holder, at the end which has no erasing material, are separated or kept apart by a piece of wood or other suitable packing, 71, firmly secured between them by means of rivets t i, or the like; or the holder may consist of one piece of wood of suitable size having a longitudinal recess formed in it to receive the eraser, in which case the packing it may be dispensed with.
Heretofore a rubber eraser has been com posed of two semicimular shells, one containing a circular disk of rubber and the two united by a pivot. In another instance an eraser has been composed of an erasive tablet arranged in a flat tubular case havinga central longitudinal slot in one side, through which projects a pin attached to the tablet, whereby the latter can be slid within the case to project or retract the end 'or ends of the same; and, further, a ferrule has been secured to the end of a pencil and provided with two arms between which is centrally pivoted a tube carrying in one end a pencil-eraser and in the other end an inkeraser, so that the head can be rotated and held by a sliding sleeve for the purpose of us- My invention differs from ing either eraser.
such constructions, as will be obvious from the foregoing specification.
\Vhat I claim is 1. As an improved article of manufacture, an eraser composed of two fiat plates, a a, secured together with a space between them, and an erasive tablet having one end pivoted between the two plates at one end thereof by a transverse pin passing through one end of the plates and the tablet, the other ends of the plates being connected by a transverse pin, substantially as described, whereby the tablet can swing horizontally from between the plates to project longitudinally therefrom in the di rection of their length, as set forth.
2. An eraser composed, substantially, of two flat parallel plates, a a, having side notches, e e, and secured together with a space between them, and an erasive tablet having one end pivoted between the two plates at one end thereof by a transverse pin, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. An eraser composed of two flat plates and two erasive' tablets secured, respectively, between the plates at the ends thereof by independent pivot-pins which pass through the tablets and serve to connect the plates, substantially as described, whereby either tablet can be swung from between the plates or
