I. W. BAGHO. POCKET COMPANION.
No. 555,752.- Patented Mar. 3, 18-96.
/NVENTO/? ATTORNEYS.
UNITED TATES FREDERICK W. BACHO,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF MOBILE, ALABAMA.
POCKET COMPANION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 555,? 52, dated March 3, 1896.
' Application filed May 25, 1895. Serial No. 550,625. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. BACHO, of Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pocket Oompanions,of which the follpwing is a full, clear, and exact descri pti on. I
The object of this invention is to provide in a compact form a combination or series of useful articles, such as writing materials, reference-tables, a measuring device, toilet articles, and other devices.
The invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a pocket companion embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section 011 the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of one portion of the device. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of another portion thereof, and Figs. 7, 8, and 9 show toilet articles adapted to be combined with the device.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the tubular body portion of the device, in one end of which a pencil-holder A and also a penholder A are designed to slide. From the pencil-holder A a pin a extends outward through a slot at in the body portion, and by means of which the pencil-holder may be slid into and out of the body portion. A similar pin a extends from the penholder A through a slot a in the body portion, and by means of which the said penholder carrying a pen may be slid into and outward relatively to the body portion.
A is a tape of suitable textile material secured at one end to a rotary spindle a and having its free end projected through a slot a in the body portion, and provided with a finger-piece, through the medium of which it may be drawn outward. This finger-piece is larger than the transverse opening of the slot a and therefore it will prevent the free end of the tape from being drawn into the body portion when the spindle (t is rotated to coil the said tape. This tape is designed to be provided with any desirable referencetables or similar devices. As here shown, it is provided at one edge with a calendar designating the months, days, and dates, and also on the opposite edge with a measuring device.
The spindle a has a step-bearing at its lower end in a diaphragm a securedwithin the body portion A, and said spindle is extended outward through a removable washer or diaphragm a and rigidly connected to a thimble A engaging in and adapted to rotate in the end of the body portion A. A rubber eraser a is secured within a metal casing as, which is removably fitted in the thimble A". This casing a" is designed to be reversed and inserted in the portion A so as to either project the rubber (t for use, as shown in Fig. 5, or to incase the rubber, as shown in Fig. 2.
The end of the body portion A adjacent to the thimble A is provided with longitudinal depressions or pockets into which toilet articles C C C may be inserted. A ring or collar 0 may surround the body portion and the pockets and serve as a keeper for the toilet articles, The toilet articles as here shown consist of a toothpick C, an ear instrument O and a nail-cleaner 0 0 indicates a block having a whistle 0 formed in one end of it and having a knifeblade 0 projected from its other end. The block 0 and whistle are of a diameter to fit snugly yet removably within the tubular portion 0 This tubular portion serves as a handle for the knife when the whistle is inserted therein, as shown in Fig. 6, and it also serves as a protecting-casing forthe knife-blade when the parts are reversed, as shown in Fig. 2.
C is a coupling collar or shell adapted to secure the parts A and the shell 0 removably together, and in order to provide a transverse resilience to the coupling collar or ring I longitudinally kerf or slot its ends, as indicated at 0 It will be seen that the penholder A has a longitudinal slot transversely curved, so that the pencil A may slide therein without imparting motion to the penholder.
It is obvious that a combination device as shown and described will be of considerable utility as a pocket companion, as all the parts are so assembled that they can be readily placed in position for use, and in practice the Whole device need not be but a trifle larger than an ordinary pencil-holder or fountainpen.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A pocket companion, comprising a tubular body portion, a penholder movable longitudinally therein and having a trans versely-curved longitudinal slot, and a pencil-holder movable in the body portion and adapted to slide in the slot of the penholder, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a tubular body portion, of a penholder movable longitudinally therein, a pencil-holder movable longi- FREDERICK \V. BAGHO.
