SPECIFICATION `forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,887', dated September 23, 1890.

- To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. BOYNTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danvers, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Combined Rulers and Ink- Pads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein tothe accompanying drawings,for1ning part thereof, and where in like letters of reference designate similar parts in the several views.

The object of this improvement is to combine a double ruler, blotting-pad, and measure in a single compact and convenient instru- A further object is to provide the same with pen or pencil holder, and finally the object is to construct and combine the several parts in the cheapest, simplest, and most convenient manner possible, and I attain these ends by stamping the main frame thereof in proper form and shape out of a single piece of sheet metal.

The essential feature of my invention will be readily seen in the drawings, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a modified form thereof; and Figs. 3 and Ll are details.

A represents the main frame, and B is the blotting-pad, II the handle, and T the handle-engaging thimble.

L L are loops for holding the pen or pencil when the instrument is not in use, and these may be formed from the sheet-metal plate or frame in cutting and stamping by well-known methods; or they may be of separate pieces of metal soldered or locke-d to the plate A; andthe same maybe remarked as to the thimble T, as isevident.

In shaping the plate A, I prefer to stamp a measuring rule or scale on one or more of the edges thereof, as seen, at the same time that the body part is pressed or stamped into the requisite shape shown-that is, with the greater part of the central longitudinal portion thereof fiat-while either side is curved upward atrifie higher than the diameter of the ordinary pen-holder, with the extreme longitudinal outside edges thereof recurved downward, forming the channels b b, which serve to rmly hold the blotting-pad B, and

yet permit of its ready removal and replacement of a new pad.

The handle II is so hinged to the frame A that it turns in about the one-fourth part of a circle, soas to stand upright, or nearly so, when the instrument is in use, and to fold down prone with the i'lat surface of the frame; and the said handle may be placed at any convenient point of the frame or fold lengthwise or transversely, as the taste or conven ience of the user may dictate. The handle H is formed of a single coil of wire whose central part reaches upward at a right angle to its hinged base, and so engages in the slottof the handle-thimble T as to form a vertical stop for the said handle. In use this becomes a very handy handle, as much so as if firmly and iminovably fixed in position, while its hinge permits of the instrument being reversed, thus using the opposite side thereof, as well as for convenience in carrying in the pocket, as is evident.

Vhen using this handy and novel instrument with its handle upright as a double ruler and blotting-pad, the greatest nicety of shading lilies may be secured by simply turning or rolling on its curved side a triiie either way desired without moving from contact with the paper, and as made line by line-may be mopped by the blotter.

Having thus fully and clearly illustrated and described my invention and pointed out some of its most marked peculiarities and advantages, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isd

l. In a device of the character set forth, a main piece, as A, having one edge bent to substantially a right angle with its centralor body part. and both of its longitudinal edges bent to form channels, a blotting-pad at the lower side of said main piece having its edges inserted within said channels, and loops secured to said main piece adjacent to the bent edge thereof, all substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.

2. In a device of the character set forth, a main piece having its longitudinal edges bent upward and inward, as shown, and one or both of such edges formed with a measuring scale or scales, a blottingpad at the under side of said main piece held in place by the in- IOO wardly-extending dan ges at the edges thereof,

loops secured to said main piece near one edge thereof, and a hinged handle at one end of said main piece, all substantially as described.

3. AAs a new article of manufacture, a oom,- bined hanging ruler, blotting-pad, and penholder, comprising a main piece having its longitudinal edges bent upward and inward and formed with a measuring scale or scales at oneor both of its longitudinal edges, loops secured to said main piece near one edge thereof, a thimble secured to said main piece near one end thereof and formed with longitudinal and transverse openings, a hinged handle passing through said transverse opening in the thimble, and a stop on said handle passing through the transverse opening in the thirnble, all substantially as shown and described. v

4. As a new article of manufacture, a combined hanging blotting-pad and ruler comprising a main piece having its longitudinal edges bent upward and inward and formed with a measuring scale or sealesat one or both of said edges, a thimble secured to said main piece near one end thereof and formed with longitudinal and transverse openings, a hinged handle passing through said longitudinal opening and projecting over the end of the main piece, and a stop on said handle projecting outward through the transverse opening in the thimble, all substantially as shown and described.
