Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAooE J. HAToHER, 'or PHILADELPHIA, rEN'NsYLv'ANIA.
IMPROVEMENT |N PEN AND PENCIL o AsEs.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 4,839, dated `November 6, 18.46.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L-'JACOB J. HATCHER, of
the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and .Improved Combined Pen and Pencil` Case;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a is a ferrule surrounding the center of the main tube A. y n
b isa slot in the upper part of the tube A. c `is a recess cut laterally into the vup per end of the slot b.. j e Iis a projection on the upper end of the 4pencil-holder f passingthrough and workin g in the slot b. l
The short sliding tube C, Fig. 3, is placed over the upper end of the main tube A, the projection e passing through the slot niny the same, its end bei ngeven with and correspondv ing with the surface'of the tube C.
- The inclosing sliding` tube E, Fig. 5, is placed over and secured to the tube C. The two tubes C and -Etogether are the same thickness of the ferrule a. Consequently the surface of the tube E corresponds with lthe surface of the ferrule.
-The pen-holderh is secured and operated in the lowger end of the main tube A, in which it is accurately fitted: It is of atubularvform, the ever pointed pencil holder f working through the same.
d is a slot in the lower end of the main tube A.
g isa lateral recess or enlargement at the flower end of the slot d.
l i is a projection on the pen-holder h passing out through the recess g, and which may be freely Worked in the slotd. The sliding inclosing-tube B, Fig. 2, iits on over the lower end of the tube A, the projection i passing through the slot 7c in the same, in which it freely works. The outer end of the projec- `tion z' is even with and corresponds with the surface of the tube B.
m is a lateral recess or cut at the upper end y of the slot lo. f
The inclosing sliding tube D, Fig. 4, is f1tted on over the tube B and soldered to the same.
Whole is placed within an outer casing, Fig. 6, and secured there by solderingthe `ferrule a tothe center of thev same.
C, andthe combined for use. 4.
The ,operation ofV my combined .pen andl pencilvcase is as follows: In Fig. l of the accompanying drawings both the pen and pen cil holders are represented as projecting from l The pencilholder f is the maintube A. Y drawn back and lsecured in thecase as follows: By the knob s, attached to the tube C,
it is drawn outgof the case, which draws the f The tube C is thenl turned totheright, which passes the projec-` pencil into the case.
tion e on the pencil-holder into the recess c 'and secures it.' The tube C, inclosed in` the tube E, is then replaced in the case, the projection e sliding freely in the lslot n in the tube C. The ever-pointed pencil-point is pushed out of` the casey as follows: The tube O is drawn out of the case by means of knob f s as far as the projection e Willy permit. It is 'then turned to the left, therebyremovingthe j 'Y projection z' from the recess c in the upper end of the slot b to the recess p at the lower 1 p end of the slot 'n in the slide C. ABy pushing j Y the tube C into the case when inthis position the pencil-pointis projected out of the lower end of the case and is iirmly held in a posi-l tion for use.
The pen holder is operated as follows:
When the pen-holder h is in its place within the tube A, i't is drawn out bydrawing out the sliding tube D, having the tube B Secured within the same. f The tube D is then turned, so as to pass the projection i on the penholderfrom the recess fm into the recess gat .i
the lower end` of the slot d inthe main tube A.y The sndingtube D isthen repiaceain4 i the case, leaving the pen-holder projected and firmly secured in a position for use. y place the pen-holder again in the case, the
tube D is drawn out and turned so as to pass Whenthe tubes B D and` C` E aref, thusV arranged upon the main tube A, the
The knob s is then screwed to theendof the sliding tube pen andy pencil is readyy To rethe projection z' from the recess gin the main `tube A to the reeessm in the tube-B, thus disengaging it from the ina-in tube A. Then by pushing the tube D into the ease the penholder is carried with it and firmly retained by the same.
Having thus fully described'my combined pen and pencil case, What l claim therein as new, and desire to secure byLet'ters Patent,
VThe combining ofVv the pen-holder h in the same ease with the pencil-holder f by means of the sliding tubes B D, combined and operating with the main tube A substantiallyin `the manner herein set forth.
JACOB J. HATCHER. Witnesses: Z. C. ROBBINS,
