Be it known that I, EDWINJ. Toor, of Fort Madison, in the county of Lee, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and improved PenciLHolder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others Askilled in the art to vmake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- I i Figure l is a perspective view of my improved holder, showing the manner of holding the same.

Figure 2 is a central longitudinal section of the holder.

Figure 3 is a detail view of the spring.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The object of this invention is to provide a pencil-holder which bears an erasing-pad, suitably located on the exterior ease of the holder, near the point of the pencil, whereby, in the operation of marking orwriting, the erasing-pad will be presented in a convenientmanner for expunging marks made by the pencil, as will hereinaftcr -be duly set forth.

In the accompanying plate of drawings,the exterior case b holds the inner case a, 4thelatter case sliding with easy contact within the ease as shown.

The pencil e is affixed in the case a, at the lower end o f the latter; and. the said case b has affixed thereto a finger-rest, d, as shown, for the purpose of pushing down the case a, and its eontainedpeneil c, or retracting the same backward, so as to present the erasing-pad in a convenient and ready manner by merely ilexing the index-dinger, as will be obvious. The cutter c is alliced to the end ofthe case b in any suitable manner, and serves to sharpen the pencil when necessary. 'lhe sharpening-operation is performed by withdrawing the case'a entirely from the exterior' case, and scraping the point of thc pencil againstrthc cutter in any manner most convenient for the person using the pencil. e n

The upper end ofthe case a is split, as 'shown ntf, for the purpose of serving as a spring, to hold th case a from sliding too loosely \\'ithiirtlie exterior case.

The lower end ofthe case b is recessed, to permit the passage of the finger-rest d when the Apencil is retracted. f i

This invention is designed more particularly for the employment of slate-pencils, but is equally applicable to lead-pencils. i

A xnodiiication of my invention may bo made by attaching the pad-socket A to the casein such a manner that it will slide in easy contact with the case, and bc thereby retracted by the s ee'end linger. In this modification, the pencil e would remain stationary, and the socket, being mount-ed on a thimblc sliding on the ease, and provided with any suitable iinger-rest, would be retracted when the pencil was to be used, and pushed'clownward when required for erasing, which is the reverse of the Operation above `Shown :md described, but otherwise substantially the same. l
