Description
O. G. REDMOND. Weighing Attachment for Pen and Pencil Holders.
, No. 205,575. Patented July 2,1878.
WITNESSES: LVVEJVTUR: w fi q 4M 2M PETERS, PHOTO-LITHDGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, 0 (3V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES C. REDMOND, OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO WM. H. HENDERSON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WEIGHING ATTACHMENTS FOR PEN AND PENCIL HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,575, dated July 2, 1878; application tiled December 18, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. REDMoNn, of San Jos, county of Santa Clara, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Letter-Weighing Attachments for Pen and Pencil Holders, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanyin g drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a longitudinal section of a pen or pencil holder with the letter-weighing attachment inolosed therein. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the letter-weighing attachinent.
This invention relates to improvements in letter-weighin g attachments for pen and pencil holders, whereby the letterweighing attachment is adapted to be inclosed in the pen or pencil-holder and the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter fully described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents a pen or pencil holder. B represents the pencil placed in one end of the holder A, and 0 the penholder placed on the opposite end of said holder. D represents a lever provided with the usual scale for weighing letters, and E represents the sliding balance.
The pen-holding end 0 may be adapted for attaching the sliding balance, if so desired; or
a separate and permanent balance fitting into the pencil-case may be used, as deemed expedient.
When not in use the scale-beam D is turned down in a line with the arms 11, the hook a passing into the slot between the arms. The plug F is then withdrawn from the case (see Fig. 2) and the scalebeam first passed up into the case and the plug replaced, leaving the pencil or pen in position ready for use.
The lever is provided at one end with a hook, a, to which the letters are secured, and said lever is pivoted between the two arms I; b of the plug F. This plug is arranged to tit snugly in one end of the pen or pencil holder, for the purpose of inclosing the lettenweighing attachment inside of the holder, or securing it thereto when desiring to use the same.
The lever may be made in sections, (when desirous of using it on a larger scale,) and the sections secured together by an 5' suitable slide or other fastening device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
The combination, with a pen or pencil holder, of the armed plug F b b and pivoted lever I), having balance E and hook (I, or their equivalents, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES ULAWSDX REDMOXI). TVitnesses:
J. E. BROWN, H. O. Nnwnv.
