Description

R. L. WALTER.
Drawing-Pen No. 200,588. Patented FebL I Q', 1878,
' UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
RUDOLPH L. WALTER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAWI NG-PENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 200,588, dated February 19, 1878; application filed I December 29, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, RUDOLPH L. WALTER, a resident of Washington city, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing-Pens, consisting of a section or parallel lines spacing attachment thereto; and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear-and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to rule and space parallel or section lines at one and the same operation in an accurate and more simple manner than is now employed.
Any of the appurtenances now in market, as far as I know, for ruling parallel lines-as, for instance, Bergners section-liner, carrying a triangle, and others moving a ruleadmit lines of only a certain length, while with my attachment they are unlimited.
My invention, then, consists of an attachment to an ordinary drawing or ruling pen, by means of which any person acquainted with its use will be enabled by a little practice to rule equidistant parallel lines of any desirable length and certain space apart with measured exactness.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view, and Figs. 2 and 5 are front views, embodying my invention. Fig. 3 shows my attachment adjusted to a drawing-pen, and Fig. 4 shows it set for. active operation.
It will readily be seen that my attachment is intended to be used on the outside blade of a drawing-pen, to which it conforms in shape, and which it snugly fits and holds with the clamp b. It is slotted for the reception of the drawing-pen screw, the head of which holds and firmly secures it to the pen. The slot 0 is made of some length for thepurpose of allowing movement up or down, adjustment to different size pens, and also of giving to the attachment a balanced elasticity when the screw a is turned, which latter, when nearly or entirely screwed home, as is required for wide spacing, will tilt or slide a-little on the blade of the drawing-pen, exerting at the same time apressure toward the point thereof, which is readily counteracted by the drawing-pen screw.
In order to space and rule parallel lines according to my plan, slide the attachment down until its measuring-point 0 comes nearly on line or even with the points of the drawingpen, without touching the paper; turn the screw it until the required space is obtained; ink the pen, regulate it for fine or coarse lines, as the case may be, and rule by T-square or triangle. The point 0 will then, each time a line is to be ruled, accurately measure the space, and uniformity and neatness are secured according to the skill of the operator.
Fig. 5 represents my attachment more especially adapted for use with a certain size drawing-pen, operating substantially in the same manner above described.
My attachment can also, by a slight change in form, and without departing from the spirit of my invention, be made adjustable to a common lead-pencil or pen-holder, and large enough to space-inches instead of lines.
The material I prefer for its construction is steel, finely tempered.
Having thus fully described my invention, and set forth its operation and advantages, I do not claim, broadly, any attachment to a drawing-pen; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A detachable attachment to an ordinary drawingpen, having slot 0 and measuringpoint 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A detachable attachment to an ordinary drawing-pen, having screw a, slot 6, and measuring-point 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. A section or parallel lines spacing attachment to an ordinary drawing-pen, having the clamp 11, slot 0, screw or, and measuringpoint 0, operating together substantially as and for the purpose above set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I have" signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RUDOLPH L. WALTER.
