UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KARL SOI'IULZE, OF HANOVER, GERMANY.
PIANO-PEDAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,316, dated December 1, 1896.
Application filed November 25, 1895. Serial No. 569,999. (No model.) Patented in Austria June 19, 1894, No. 44/2526.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, KARL SOHULZE, musicmaster, a citizen of the Kingdom of Prussia, and a resident of Hanover, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piano-Pedals, (for which I obtained a patent in Austria June 19, 1894:, N0. 44/2,526,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved adjustable piano-pedal which will adapt them for use by persons of different sizes, from small-sized children to the tallest grown persons.
Such devices have heretofore been more or less complicated and have consisted chiefly in separate attachments more or less complicated and having interposed boards or footstools connected with the proper pedals.
My invention consists in a pedal lever shaped in the usual way and made of two separable sections, one of which has a squared hole through its underlapping flange, and the other of said sections has a square bar secured at right angles thereto to pass through the square hole in the underlying flange, and a set-screw which passes through one of said sections and engages with the square bar to adjust one section upon the other, as will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an adjustable piano-pedal with the two sections brought together in the same plane to adapt the pedal to suit persons of medium height; Fig. 2, a similar view of said pedal with the adjustable section raised above the lever-section to adapt it for the use of shorter persons, and Fig. 3 a similar view of the pedal with the adjustable section depressed or pendent from the levcr-section to suit extra-tall persons.
The pedal-lever A has a depressed underlapping portion a, having a squared hole a, passing vertically through the said underlying portion a, and a side flange into which is fitted a clamping-screw D, which extends under the portion a of the lever and engages with notches E in a square bar B, secured at one end and at right angles to the adjustable section 0 of the pedal. The bar 13 is numbered l to 10, each number having a corresponding notch E therein to receive the end of the clamping-screwD and thus effectively prevent the barB from slipping past the screw D when the latter has been adjusted. This is so easily done that a child may readily fix the pedal at the number required and thus adapt it to be reached conveniently from the stool by the person for whom the adjustment has been made.
The foot-rest or adjustable section 0, with its square bar 13, may be turned up, as shown in Fig. 3, with the said bar passing through the hole in the portion a and secured thereto by the set-screw D, thus adapting the adjustable section for use by adults.
The construction herein shown is simple, strong, inexpensive, and easilyadjusted, even by children, the numbers and corresponding notches greatly facilitating the adj ustment.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An adjustable piano pedal, consisting of a lever-section A, having a depressed portion a, an adjustable section 0 and a square bar 13 secured thereto, having a depression in one side thereof and a set-screw D fitted in the lever-section Ato engage with the depressions of the bar, substantially as described.
2. An adjustable piano-pedal, consisting of a lever-section A, having a depressed portion a, an adjustable section 0, a square bar B secured thereto having a depression in one side thereof and a series of numbers opposite each of said depressions and means for locking the bar 13 opposite each of said depressions, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
KARL SOHULZE.
