DEVIGB FOR USE IN DRYING HAIR ON THE Hun.
No. 571,960. Patented Nov. 24, 1896.
UNITED STATES GW'ENDOLINE R. \VATERS,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF DENVER, COLORADO.
DEVICE FOR USE IN DRYING HAIR ON THE HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,960, dated November 24, 1896,
Application filed February 28, 1896. Serial No. 581,198. (No model.)
for Use in Drying Hair on the Head, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and convenient device for use in the boudoir or in the hairdressers shop for drying out ladies hair after the bath or after washing or cleaning.
The invention consists of a portable folding frame which may be readily applied to the person and is capable of sustaining the hair, when the latter is opened up and spread over it, in such manner as to permit the free circulation of air through the hair and thus hasten its thorough drying.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is an elevation showing the manner of using my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the appliance. Fig. 8 is a rear elevation of the back-plate. Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation, on a larger scale, of the back-plate and folding arm.
The letter a designates the back-plate,which may be of flexible material, such as rubber, cloth, or metal, so as to be capable of being applied to and bound about a womans back. and having sufficient rigidity inherently or imparted to it to receive and sustain certain arms I), which are designed to stand off from the back-piece at about right angles to it. These arms are pivotally connected to the back-piece, so as to be capable of being spread out radially therefrom like the sticks of a folding fan, the extent of such outspreadin g of the arms being limited by stay-strips c, of cord,-
ribbon, or other flexible material, these staystrips serving further to support the openedup hair. The drawings show one construction of these pivoted arms, but I wish to be understood as not limiting my invention thereto. The back-piece is supplied with metal or other socket pieces (Z, arranged vertically thereon, and the arms I) are made with the right-angled pintles b, Figs. 1 and 4, which are fitted to turn in said'socket-pieces.
The back-piece is provided with eyes or loops (1, to which bands, straps, or ribbons e may be affixed in order to tie the appliance to a persons back, as in Fig. 1, and in order to keep the appliance extended there may be interposed springs, elastic bands, ribbons, cords, or other extension-pieces f.
When the appliance is not in use, its arms may be detached from the back-piece and folded or bundled together and with the backpiece and various straps, 850., into a small and compact package, which may be readily stowed away in a drawer, box, trunk, or other receptacle at home or in traveling.
Of course the ends b may be adapted for use in sockets at .top and bottom or only at top of the back-piece, and so also such a connection may be made between the arms and backpiece which, while admitting of the arms being spread out and folded together, will depend for the support of the arms, as in Fig. 2, upon the body-straps or other support. These and other modifications of my invention I mean to include in my claims of invention.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. A portable and folding appliance for drying the hair, comprising a back-piece hav ing arms pivoted thereto, and adapted to be strapped to a persons back to receive and support the opened-up hair, and to be detached and folded together when not in use, substantially as described.
2. An appliance for drying hair on the head, comprising a back-piece, arms radially pivoted thereto, and connected by stay-strips, straps for securing the appliance to the person, and elastic mediums disposed between the straps and the arms to retain the arms in radial extension, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of February, A. D. 1896.
