FRANK MCGRAIL, OF NEVJ- YORK, N. Y.
BEACH CHAIR AND THE LIKE.
Application filed January 17, 1924.. Serial No. 686,788.
My present invention relates to an improved device for use on bathing beaches and elsewhere as a back-rest and sunshade or canopy, the device serving effectively for this purpose and also being foldable into a convenient flat form occupying a minimum of space so as to be readily portable and adapted to be conveniently stowed in a bath house, automobile or elsewhere.
In the drawings, I have shown one preferred embodiment of a combined back-rest and canopy within my invention, Fig. 1 being a perspective view showing the device unfolded and set up for use; Fig. 2 being a combined sectional and elevational view on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 3 being a perspective view on a larger scale of one of the up per corners of Fig. 1 from which the parts of the frames radiate, the covering material being omittedfrom the frames; and Fig. at shows the device folded up and indicates how the valance of the canopy is used to make a self-cntained parcel of the nested frames.
I will now describe my invention assisted by a reference to the specific devices of the drawings. Said device consists of three U- shaped frames 1, 2 and 3. The frame 1 has,
two side bars 1. The same is true of frames 2 and 3 whose side bars respectively are designated 2 and 3 Further, each frame 1, 2 and 3 has an end bar designated respectively 1", 2 and 3 rigidly uniting the side bars at one end thereof. The side bars of all the frames at their other ends are transversely pierced with holes and pivotally supported upon the fixed pin or trunnions 4:4t projecting longitudinally from both ends of a rod 5.
This rod 5, together with the side and end bars of all the frames, preferably consist for lightness and general suitability of pieces of round-sectioned wooden rod with their ends, where necessary, protected and strengthened by metal bands or ferrules 6.
7-7 (Fig. 3) are washers on the trunnions 4-. preferably provided, as shown, to keep the side bars of the several frames out of direct contact with one another. The extremity of each trunnion 4 is provided with an enlarged head t serving to retain all of the side bars from accidentally coming off the trunnions.
The said frames 1, 2 and 3 are of graduated size whereby they are adapted to be pivoted and folded together in nested relationship, as shown in Fig. l, when the device is being transported or stored. The arrows in Fig. 2 indicate how the frames will fold and nest one within another.
The largest frame 3 is covered with a material or fabric 8 and is surrounded with a valance 9 so that this frame acts as a sunshade or' canopy when the frames are unfolded and the device set up for use as in Fig. 1.
The middle size frame 2 is covered with a fabric or material 10 whereby this frame constitutes a back-rest.
The smallest frame 1 is not covered, it serving as a brace for the back-rest frame 2. the cross bars of the two frames 1 and 2 being connected together by a strap 11 which prevents them from accidentally becoming too widely separated in use.
Thus, the described back-rest and the canopy comprise three frames of graduated size pivoted together at one end, whereby they can be folded into nested relationship and can be unfolded with two of said frames constituting an A-shaped back-rest and brace therefor, with the third frame forming a canopy extending from the top of the backrest.
12 is a releasable or collapsible prop operatively connecting the side bars of the canopy and back-rest frames, said prop consisting of two links pivoted to each other and to the respective side bars.
The valance 9 is foldable over the margin of the frames when nested, as indicated in Fig. 4. Snap fastener means 14 is provided for releasably securing together the parts of the valance at the folds; and further snap fastener means 15 is provided for releasably securing the valance to the smallest frame 1. This serves to make a self-contained fiat package (Fig. 4) of the foldedup device which is conveniently shaped to carry and stow away.
It is to be understood that this invention is not limited to the specific construction hereinbefore described, as it is evident that various changes might be made in applying the invention without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A back-rest and canopy comprising the combination of three frames of graduated size, two of which at one end are pivoted to one and the same end of the third frame with all three of said frames nested within one another in the same plane, said frames being adapted to be folded together in nested relationship and to be unfolded with two of said frames forming an A- shaped back-rest and brace therefor, with the third frame forming a canopy extending from the top of said back-rest.
A back-rest and canopy con'iprising the combination of three frames of graduated size, two of which. at one end are pivoted to one and the same end of the third frame with all three of said frames nested within one another in the same plane, said frames being adapted to be folded together in iested relationship and to be unfolded with two of said frames forming an A-shaped back-rest and brace therefor, with the third frame forn'iing a canopy extending from the top of said back-rest, said canopy frame being covered with a suitable material as is also the back-rest frame.
3. A back-rest and canopy eomprising'the combination ofthree frames of graduated size, two of which at one end are pivoted to one and the same end of the third frame with all three of said frames nested within one another in the same plane, said frames being adapted to be folded together in nested relationrhip and to be unfolded with two of said frames forming an A shaped back-rest and brace therefor, with the third frame forming a canopy extending from the top of said back-rest, the canopy frame being the largestand the back-rest the middle sized frame.
t. A baclcrest and canopy comprising the combination of three frames of graduated size, two of which at one end are pivoted to one and the same end of the'third frame with all three of said frames nested Within one another-in the same plane, said frames being adapted to be folded together in nested relationship and to be unfolded with two of said frames forming an A-shaped back-rest and brace therefor, with the third frame forming acanopy extending from the top of said back-rest, the canopy frame being the largest and the back-rest the middle sized frame, the canopy frame being covered with a suitable material and having a valance hanging from its periphery when open, said valance being foldable over the the back-rest frame, the canopy frame being larger than the back-rest frame, said canopy frame being covered with a suitable material and having a valance hanging from its periphery when open, said valance being foldable over the margin of the frames when nested; and releasable means for securing the alance in said folded position with the frames and brace nested together.
In testimony whereof, I l'iavesigned my name to this specification this 15 day of January, 192
FRANK MCGRAIL.
