This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a folding bed rest for beaches, camps, and other places.
More specifically the invention proposes a bed rest which is characterized by a cloth casing of a certain construction, and a foldable frame of a construction capable of holding the cloth casing in an open position and capable of being folded in a certain way.
More specifically the invention proposes to characterize the cloth casing by the fact that it has a top portion. with tubular sockets adapted to cooperate in a certain way with foldable rods of said foldable frame to hold the top portion of the casing extended in a certain way. Moreover it is also proposed that the cloth casing having a back portion which continues from said top portion, and also it is proposed that the casing have a bottom portion continuing from the back portion. This bottom portion may rest on the ground or other supporting surface. The frame is so constructed as to hold the back portion, and the top portion in positions to shield a person relaxing on the bottom portion of said casing.
An important feature of the foldable frame is that it may fold up into a very small compass in which all of the component parts are disposed in a, common plane. It is proposed that the cloth casing be so constructed and arranged that it may be wrapped around the folded frame to form a carrying case for the bed rest when the latter is not being used.
Still further the invention proposes the construction of a foldable bed rest as mentioned, which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantage thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 16 is a fragmentary perspective View, similar to Fig. 1, but illustrating another modification of the invention.
The foldable bed rest in accordance with this invention includes a cloth casing l5 provided with a top portion it having tubular sockets 16' along the front portions of its sides. The top portion l5 extends rearwards and continues into a back portion I! which continues into a bottom portion l8. This bottom portion [8 is adapted to extend along the ground, or other supporting surface when the foldable bed rest is being used. A pair of side flaps I9 are arranged upon the sides of the iicp portion [6 rearwards of the tubular sockets These side flaps i9 may be folded upwards if desired as indicated by the full lines in Fig. 2. The dot and dash lines in this figure represent the side flaps l9 in their depending positions. The cloth casing I5 is normally held in an open position by a foldable frame 2|].
The foldable frame 20 includes a horizontal U-shaped top section 2 I, havin it side arms 2 l extending rearwards and having a pair of extending foldable rods 22 mounted on the said side arm Zi The foldable'rods 22 engage into the tubular sockets l6 of the cloth casing I5 when the foldable bed rest is being used. These rods 22 serve to support the front portion of the top portion it of said cloth casing. The foldable rods 22 are mounted upon the side arms 2W by pintles 23 engaging through these parts. The ide rods 22 are extended from along the outer faces of the side arms 2 l The inner ends of the rods 22 are formed with small inwardly directed lugs 24 which engage beneath the bottom edges of the side arms 2W normally holding the rods 22 in their extended positions. The arrangement is such that the front ends of the rods 22 may be pivoted up wards to desirable angular positions as indicated by the dot and dash lines 22 in Fig. 4, or for full lines in Fig. 11. In these slightly upwardly pivoted positions, the rods 22 engage into the tubular sockets IE, to hold the front portion of the top portion is slightly extended upwards. When the foldable frame 20 is completely folded, the rods 22 are pivoted upwards and rearwards' from the positions shown in Fig. 4, through 180 so as to extend along the sides of the side arms 2V as clearly shown in Fig. 3'.
The foldable frame 29 also includes a vertical inverted U-shaped back section 26 with its side arms 26 extending downwards and in between the side arms 2i of the top section 2|. Pivots 21 pivotally connect the side arm's 2i" with the upper portions of the side arms 26 The foldable frame 223' is also provided with another vertical inverted U-shap'ed back section 28 having its side arms 28 extending downwards and in between the side arms 23 of the back section it. Pintles 29 pivotally connect the side arms 23 and 28 together. These pintles 29 are located at the lower extremities of the side arms 26 and L at the upper extremities of the side arms 28=-.
The back sections 26 and 28 are arranged so as to be foldable when the foldable frame 25 is folded up. These back sections are also arranged to maintain extended positions whenthe foldable frame is in its open position. This latter means includes lugs 38 on the bottom ends of the side arms and normally engaging against the front edges of the side arms 28 These lugs 36 are so arranged that normally the top back section 25 leans slightly forwards as clearl shown in Figs. 4 and 11. Furthermore the arrangement is such that the back section 28 may be pivoted upwards to assume a position within the back section 26 as clearly shown in Fig. 3. These back sections 26 and 28 in their open positions are adapted to extend along the back portion ll of the cloth casing [5 to support the cloth casing as clearly shown in Fig, 1.
A horizontal U-shap'ed base section 32' has its side arms t2 extending frontwards and set in between the bottom ends of the side arms 28 of the back section 28. Pintles 33 pivotally connect the base section 32 and the back section 28 pivotally together. This arrangement permits the base section 32 to be folded upwards into the back section 28.
Means is provided for limiting relative pivoting of the base section 32 and the back section 28 to a right angle position, as illustrated in Fig. 4. This means includes a limiting member 34 mounted on each pivot 33 and located in between the side arm's 23 and 32*. Each limiting member as has a rear lug 35 which extends along the rear edge of its side arm 28 holding it in the vertical position. Each limiting member 34 is provided with a bottom lug 36. These bottom lugs extend beneath the bottom edges of the side arms 32 holding them in horizontal positions. The arrangement is such that the limiting game members 34 do not interfere with the base section 32 being folded upwards into the bottom section 28.
Foldable side braces 38 are pivotally connected with the base section 32 and extend upwards and rearwards, and are releasably connected with the back section 26 and the top section 2| for rigidly holding these sections together as a unit. Each foldable side brace 38 consists of three brace arms indicated by reference numerals 39, 40, 4|, which are connected together in a certain way. More specifically, the brace arms 39 are pivotally connected at their bottom ends by pivots 42 with the front ends of the side arms 32. The adjacent ends of the brace arms 39 and 49 are pivotally connected with pintles at. The brace arms 40 are provided with lugs as which extend over the top edges of the brace arms 39 immediately below the pintles 43. The arrange ment is such that the brace arms 39 and ill may be folded relative to each other by pivoting the brace arms 40 downward along the sides of the brace arms 33. v
The lugs 44 limit the extended positions of the brace arms 39 and 40 to positions in which they are slightl past their dead center in their opened positions, to rigidly hold them in these positions. The upper ends of the brace arms 48 are provided with pegs 45, which releasably engage into socket openings formed in the side arms 25 The arrangement is such that the brace arms (it ay be pulled outwards to disconnect the pegs 55 from their openings.
The brace arms 41 are pivotally connected at the bottom ends by pintles 46 with points intermediate of the ends of the brace arms in. The top ends of the brace arms 4! are provided with pegs 4'! which are releasably connected with socket openings 48 in the nature of bayonet open ings (see Fig. 6 which represents large View of a section of one of the side arms Zi The pegs 151 have enlarged heads 41 see Fig. 5, which may pass through the large ends of the bayonet openings s8 and into the small ends, to lock these parts together. The bayonet openings 48 are arranged so that the small ends are to the front. The side arms fil are provided with a plurality of the bayonet openings 48 so that the pegs 41 will be selectively engaged with the openings 63, to hold the top section 2| in various upwardly extended positions.
Each of the U-shaped sections forming the frame 2G is arranged to be laterally collapsed. The arrangement consists in each of the central portions of these sections being of separate parts and provided with a tubular socket 52 receiving the end portions of these parts. The extremities of these parts have outwardly flared portions 53 acting as stops when they engage against the ends of the tubular sockets 52. The arrangement is such the various U-shaped sections, previously indicated by the reference numerals 2|, 26, 28 and 32, may be collapsed into a small compass by pressing the parts thereof together on opposite sides. They may thereafter be extended by gripping the opposite sides and by pulling the parts back into open positions. These various U-shape'd sections are illustrated on the drawings in the extended positions. The collapsing of these sections may be best understood by examining Fig. 3, and noting that the frame 20 may be rendered smaller in width by pressing the sides together so that the separate parts of the central portions or the various U'-shaped sections overlap each other.
The back portion I! of the casing I is provided with a pocket 5!] adapted to hold various small objects when the bed rest is opened, and also when it is in the folded condition. This pocket 50 merely comprises a layer of cloth material disposed upon the inner face of the back portion I1 and secured in position by lines of stitches 5| extended along its side and bottom edges, so that the pocket is open at the top. The casing I5 is also provided with a transversely mounted handle 54 which may be used as a handle for carrying the bed rest in its completely folded position, as illustrated in Fig. 12. The casing I5 is also provided with straps and buckles 55 mounted upon the end of the bottom portion l8 and cooperative with complementary straps 56 mounted upon the bottom portion H5.
The operation of the device may be best understood from an inspection of Figs. 1, 3, 4, 11 and 12. In Fig. 1 the foldable frame 29 is shown supporting the cloth casing in a position which represents the fully opened position of the bed rest. A person may relax on the bottom portion l8, so that the head is shielded from the sun by the back portion [1 and the top portion Hi. If it is desired the top portion l5 may be supported at various upwardly inclined positions by forcing the pegs 4? out of their engaged bayonet opening 48 in the side arms 2W reengaging these pegs in difierent ones of said bayonet openings 48.
The device may be folded up by first removing the casing !5. Then the pegs 45 and 4! may be disengaged from their complementary openlugs, and various U-shaped sections of the fold able frame 20, may then be folded up into position as illustrated in Fig. 3. The folded frame 20 as shown in Fig. 3 may then be laterally collapsed by forcing the sides together. Then the casing l5 may be rolled around the folded frame 20, so that the article is in the condition illustrated in Fig. 12.
In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 14 the bed rest is provided with a casing I5 which distinguishes from the casing in the prior form of the invention, in the fact that the bottom portion 98' thereof is constructed in the nature of an inflatable bag IS The bag l8 is provided with a valve m through which it may be inflated. The case i5 is made from waterproof airtight material. With this arrangement the bed rest may be used in the nature of a float in the water of a lake, beach, or other place.
In other respects this form of the invention is identical to the prior form and identical parts may be recognized by the same reference numerals.
In Fig. 16, the top members H are shown to be braced by support ropes 60 to the ground by stakes 6! or the like.
An inflated head rest or pillow -63 may be used in connection with the folding bed rest as illustrated in Fig. 1.
It is to be understood that this folding bed rest may be made in various color combinations and of any suitable size.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
