2 Claims.

This invention relates to crib covers and has for its principal object to provide a cover which can be brought down on top of a childs crib and thereby retain the child safely within the crib.

Various expedientshave heretofore been used to keep a child in a crib so that he cannot climb or fall out of it while unattended. Examples of such expedients have been straps which tie to the child, or blankets which hold him down in a sleeping position. Any of such expedients, however, has the disadvantage of hampering the childs freedom of movement and even of allowing him to become tangled; and in some instances, they have even been dangerous.

In accordance with the present invention, I provide a cover which insures the child staying in the crib and without hampering him in his movement while in the crib. This cover is applicable to an ordinary crib, for example, the well known type having the drop front. It comprises a cover in the form of a desired pliable material attached to a frame which is fastened to the top of the crib. Preferably, the frame is hinged at one part of the crib, for example, the back; and it i adapted to be brought down over the top of the crib for fastening.

A feature of the construction is the provision of a pliable cover material shaped to fold over the framework and fasten thereto. Preferably,

this is done by a set of hooks and eyes, or the like, which clasp with each other.

A further feature resides in the provision of strap mean at the side opposite the hinge or permanent fastening, which can engage with a bar of the crib.

The foregoing and other features of the construction will be better understood from the following detailed description and. the accompanying drawing, of which:

Fig. l is a plan view of the cover and its frame, showing the cover unattached to the frame;

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the crib with the cover on it; and

Fig. 3 shows a detail of the attachment of the cover frame to the back of the crib.

Referring to the drawings, there is shown a crib l U of a well known type having the two ends II and I2 respectively, a slatted back I3 and a slatted front I4. In accordance with a common practice, the back has a fixed horizontal top bar or member l5 to which the vertical slats l6 are attached, and the front has horizontal upper and lower bars I1 and I8 connected by vertical slats l9. According to a common practice, the

V 2' front is a drop-front, movable upward and downward; and for this purpose there are provided vertical rods 20 attached at their upper and lower extremities to the front bedposts. The dropfront can then slide up and down on guides 2| attached to the front. Usually there is a latch (not shown) which holds the front in its upper position when it is brought up.

The cover made according to my present invention, comprises a cover cloth material I attached to a rigid frame 2. The frame may be of suitable structural material such as a hollow tubular metal construction, or may be of wood or the like; and it is made rectangular to conform with the shape of the crib. The cover material I may be of a suitable flexible material such as a cloth of muslin or the like, which is stretched beneath the frame with margins la protruding beyond the frame on all four sides of the rectangular frame, and leaving corner cut-outs lb. The cover is provided with sets of snap fasteners 3 and 3a, respectively, on opposite sides of the frame. This may comprise the well known resilient snap and recess combination; for example, the outer set 3 may comprise the protuberances and the other set 3a may comprise the recesses. The margins I a of the sheet I will be folded around the frame 2 and carried back on itself so that the fastening elements 3 will fasten with the corresponding elements 3a. By this arrangement, the cover may be readily applied to and taken off the frame so that it may be removed for washing.

A pair of straps 5 are attached beneath the cover sheet and at the front of the cover, but are not attached to the front margin Ia; and are arranged so that the free strap ends are protrudme, so that when the fasteners 3 and 3a are snapped together, the free ends of the strap can be carried back over the top of the cover. These are adapted to engage with buckles 6 fastened at the top of the cover.

There are attached to the rear frame member a pair of spaced straps 8 which may be of metal and which act as hinges. These may comprise strips, the lower ends of which may be fastened,

for example, by screws, to the back frame bar l5 of the crib; and the upper ends of strips 8 may be curved at 1 to pass all or part way around the bar 9 of the frame. The curved portions I can be sprung over the bar 9. The bar 9 will then be rotatable Within the collars to enable the cover to be raised and lowered.

To provide for these hinges, the cover will be provided with holes or out-outs 4 at the hinges. By reason of the hinge arrangement, the cover can be lifted to uncover the top of the crib; and when it is desired to bring the cover down, the front l4 can be raised to its upper position along the rods 20, and the straps '5 can then be carried around the bar I! to buckle with the buckle 6.

I claim:

1. A crib cover comprising a rigid frame shaped to fit the top of a crib having a horizontal bar, and a flexible cloth cover sheet attached to the frame, said cover sheet having margin portions overlying all sides of the frame and being provided with fastening means both on the margin portions and on the portion of the cover inside the frame, the margins being folded over the frame and the fastening means fastened together, the back of said framebeing hinged to the crib, the front of the frame being provided with forwardly protruding straps, and buckles fastened to the top of the cover sheet, whereby the straps can be brought underneath the crib bar and buckled to the buckles.

2. A crib cover comprising a rigid rectangular frame shaped to fit the top of a crib, and a flexible cover sheet attached to the frame, said cover sheet havin margin portions overlying the four sides of the frame and provided with a set of fastening means both along the margins and inside the irame, said margins being folded over the frame, and the fastening means both outside and inside the frame being fastened together, the back of the frame being hinged to the crib, and strap means provided along the forward portion of the cover sheet, said strap means having ends protruding beyond the cover, and buckles fastened on the top side of the cover sheet and adapted to receive the strap ends.
