Be it known that I, THADDEUs B. BIKER,

of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to head-rests adapted especially for use upon railroad-car seats.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a head-rest adapted to be removably supported upon the back of a car-seat without requiring any alteration in the construction of the seat-back, and without the slightest liability of defacing or in way injuring the upholstering of the back.

'A further object of the invention is to provide a removable and portable head rest adapted to be readily folded together for stowage in an ordinary hand-Satchel, and as readily unfolded for use when desired.

A further object of the invention is to provide a portable head-rest which may be man ufactured and supplied to the traveling` public at a trifling cost, and in which all cumber some and complicated parts and -mechanism are avoided.

The invention consists in the combination, with a frame consisting of folding side pieces and devices for securing the same upon the back. of a carseat, of strips of canvas or equivalent material adapted to be removably applied to said frame.

The invention further consists in the combination, with a frame consisting of folding side pieces and a pvoted transverse brace, of devices for securing the frame upon the back of a car-seat, and strips of iiexible material adapted to be removably secured to said frame.

The invention further consists in the details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure Ll. is a perspective view of a head-rest constructed in accordance with my improvement. Fig. 2 illustrates the device applied to a car-seat back. Fig. 8 shows the device folded for transportation. Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate modifications,

The frame of the device consists of two folding side pieces, A A, each consisting of a lower section, B, and an upper section, B. The upper end ofl each lower section, B, is bent rearwardly to form a catch or hook, C, adapted to rest upon the top edge of the back of the seat. Each section B is also provided with a stop, D, near its upper end. These stops may be formed integrally with the sections B B, or separately therefrom and secured by rivets, as desired. I prefer, however, to form each section B with a lug or projection and bend the latter to form the stop. rIhe lower ends of the upper sections, BB, are pivotally secured to the sections B B below the stops D D, thus adapting said upper sections to be readily turned outwardlyv and downwardly, to lie parallel with the lower sections when the device is not in use, and also enabling said upper sections to be held against inward movement and in line with the lower sections by the stops D D, as shown in Figs. l and 2.

F F represent strips of flexible material, preferably canvas, formed with side pockets, ff, to receive the framesections, as clearly shown in Fig. l. 'Ihe lower strip, F', is provided with a hook, f, to engage the brace E.

From the construction thus described and illustrated it will be observed that the hooks C C simply rest upon the top edge of the seatbacl; and do not grasp the latter. Thus all danger of defacing the seat is avoided. The lower section of the device rests against the seat-back, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and is held in place by the back of the user. The weight of the user serves to hold the upper part of the device, or the. head-rest proper,

firmly, to adapt it to support the weight of the head, the hooks C C serving to prevent the device from slipping downwardly.

The improvement as thus described is susceptible of various alterations and modifications.

In Fig. 5 I have shown one of the side pieces A of the frame adjustable upon the brace IOO justable section formed with an elongated partures in forni and construction as may vby means of a thumb-screw, G, and a series of f perforations, g, formed in said brace. By this means the width of the rest may be varied.

In Fig. 4 I have shown a longitudinally-adslot, It, and thumb-screw H. If preferred, the sections B and B of each side piece may be hinged, instead of pivoted.

Many other slight alterations might be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I do not limit myself to the exact construction here shown, but vreserve to myself the right to make all such deproperly fall within the scope of myinvention.

When the head-rest is not requiredfor use, the canvas strips are removed, the upper side sections, B B', are turned down upon the lower sections, B B, and the latter are laid against the brace E, as shown in Fig. 3.

The canvas strips may be wrapped around the folded frame and the whole conveniently packed in a valise or satchel.

.Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination, with a frame whose sides each consist of upper and lower folding sections, of arms for securing the device to the top edge of a seat, stops for supporting the upper sections of the sides, a transverse brace securing the sides together, and flexible covers, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a folding frame whose sides each consist of sections pivoted together and formed with extensions and stops, substantially as described, of a transverse brace pivotally secured to the side sections, and transverse lexible strips or covering connecting said sections, substantially as set forth.

3. Ihe combination of the sides of the folding frame, each consisting of a lower section formed with a rearward extension and a stop, substantially as described, and a top section pivoted to the lower section, a transverse brace pivotally secured to the pivot of the side sections, and transverse tlexible strips or coverings connecting the said top and lower sections, substantially as set forth.

4. rIhe combination of the lower side sections, each formed with a rearward extension and a forwardly-proj eeting stop at its top, the top sections pivotally secured to the lower sections below said stops and engaging the same, as set forth, the transverse brace, a transverse flexible removable strip or covering connecting the top sections, and a corresponding removable strip or covering connecting the lower sections, substantially as set forth.
