Be it known that I, JIMMIE B. ORUMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Fireplace- Heater, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to fireplace-heaters; and the primary object aimed at is to prevent dust and ashes from flying into the room and to guard against live coals falling upon the floor or hearth.

The improvement consists of certain details of construction, novel features, and peculiar combination of the parts which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed.

For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.

The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof; and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a coal-grate or fireplace-heater constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof on the line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan section on the line Y Y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the means for supporting the screen and blower when elevated.

Similar and corresponding parts in the description and all the figures of the drawings are referred to and designated by the same reference-characters.

The front 1 may be of any pattern usually employed in the construction of open grates or fireplace-heaters, and is provided at its upper end with a shield 2,-forming an ornament, and which serves to hide the means whereby the guards are held in an elevated position. The basket or fire-pot comprises an upright grate 3 and a tilting grate 4, the latter having end trunnions 5 to turn upon when clumping. The front end of the tilting grate is forwardly inclined, and the lower end of the upright grate 3 is correspondingly inclined, so as to provide an overlapping joint 6, which prevents the grate 4 from tilting downwardly at its front end. A toothed segment 7 is located at one end of the grate 4: and is concen- 5 5 trio with the adjacent trunnion, and a rackbar 8, mounted in suitable guides, meshes with the toothed segment and is adapted when reoiprocated todump the grate by tilting the same upon its trunnions, as will be readily 6o comprehended. A casing 9 projects vertically from the front 1 and is in the same plane therewith and forms a pocket 10, within which slide the guards 11 and 12, the former being a screen which when lowered prevents coals from dropping upon the floor or hearth and the latter being a blower which when lowered causes the draft to pass through the coals and prevents ashes and dust from flying into the room when raking the fire or dumping the grate. A partition 13 divides the pocket 10 into two compartments and holds the screen and blower separated and obviates interference of the one with the other when sliding into or out of the pocket. A turn-button 14: is 7 5 pivoted to the upper end of the front 1 in the rear of the shield 2 and when turned properly projects across the lower end of the pocket, so as to receive and support the blower 12, and

it can be turned aside when it is required to lower the blower either to quicken the fire or to prevent the escape of dust and ashes into the room. A stop 15 is provided on one leg of the front to support the blower a short distance above the fender 16 and has pivotal connection with its support, so as to be turned aside when it is required to lower the blower upon the fender.

The screen 11 has a ring 18 at its lower end to engage with a projection 17, provided on 0 the front 1 immediately in the rear of the shield 2, and by this means the screen is held elevated within the pocket 10 when not required for use. By locating the parts 17, 18,

and 14 in the rear of the ornament or shield 2 they are concealed from view, which is desirable for obvious reasons. I

and its lower edge touches the sliding plate 20, and its office is to act in the capacity of a scraper and remove the ashes from the plate as the latter is drawn forward, whereby they will drop into the ash-pan 22, and during this operation, as well as the shaking of the fire or the tilting of the grate, the blower 12 is lowered to prevent the escape of ashes or dust into the room. A rod 24: is connected with the front end of the plate 20 and can be folded beneath the fender 16, so as to be out of the way, and is readily accessible when it is required to operate the plate 20in the man- The front end of the reservoirpit 21 is forwardly inclined to admit of the tipping upward of the front end of the ashpan 22 when removing the latter from beneath the blade 23, and the ash-pan is provided at each end with a handle 25 to facilitate the moving of the same.

The side pieces or legs of the front 1 are grooved or channeled in their inner sides in line with the pocket 10 to form guides or ways 26 to give proper direction to the guards 11 and 12 in their Vertical sliding movements. The pocket 10 may be formed. in the brickwork or masonry of a chimney-breast, or may be provided by a sheet-metal casing, or supplied in any convenient manner that maysuggest itself to the artisan.

The ring 18 and the turn-button 1% are operated by hand to release or hold the guards elevated, the hand, suitably protected, being employed for this purpose, or an instrument, such as a poker, shaker, or other implement usually found about a stove or heater, may be resorted to for effecting the desired end.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In combination, an open front heater having a pocket above and in line with its front, and having guides or ways in the inner sides of the legs or side pieces of the said front, guards slidably mounted within the pocket and ways, means as a turn-button, ring and projection at the upper end of the front for supporting the guards Within the pocket, and a shield extending in front of and concealing the supporting means for the guards, substantially as set forth.

2. In combination, a fireplace-heater having an ash-pit below the fire-pot and a reservoir-pit below the ash-pit, and extending forwardly of the ash-pit and fire-pot a sliding plate forming a bottom to the ash-pit and a cover to the reservoir-pit, and a vertical blade about in line with the front of theash-pit and having its lower edge about touching the top side of the sliding plate, substantially as set forth for the purpose described.

3. In combination, a fireplace-heater having an ash-pit below the fire-pot and a reservoir-pit below the ash-pit with its front end forwardly inclined, and extending forwardly of the ash-pit and fire-pot an ash-pan removably located in the reservoir-pit, a sliding plate forming a cover for the ash-pan and a bottom to the ash-pit, and a blade disposed at about the front end of the ash-pit and having its lower edge approaching or touching the top side of the sliding plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
