BOTTLE SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,430, dated November 17, 1896. Application filed February 12, 1896. Serial No. 578,998. (No model.)

Be it known that I, SIMON COSTELLO, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Greenwich, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. This invention relates to bottles, jugs, jars, and similar vessels, and the object thereof is to provide a vessel of this class which hav ing been once filled and sealed or the stopper applied cannot be emptied of its contents without leaving evidence of the fact.

In the drawings forming part of this application I have shown my invention applied to a bottle, and the invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a bottle provided with my improvement; and Fig. 2, a plan view of a stopper which I employ, said stopper being adapted to be inserted into a filling-orifice in the bottom of the bottle.

In the practice of my invention I provide a bottle A, having a neck B, the upper end of which is closed, as shown at b, and formed in the bottom C of the bottle, which is preferably inwardly curved, as shown in Fig. 1, is

an opening D, provided with a tubular extension d, which projects upwardly into the bottle and through which the latter is adapted to be filled. I also emply a cork or stopper G, to the bottom of which is secured a plate 9, by means of a rod 9 which extends centrally through the cork or stopper G, to the upper end of which is secured a plate-spring H, the ends of which are reversely curved, as shown at h in Fig. 2. I also employ a plug or stopper K, which is adapted to be inserted through a filling opening or tube d at the bottom of the bottle and to beforced into the neck B, as shown in Fig. 1.

Instead of employing the cork or stopper G and the bottom plate g I may employ aplug of any desired material, form the rod 9 integrally therewith, and connect the spring H with the inner end of said rod in any desired manner, and the plate 9 may also be formed integrallywith said plug or stopper,if desired.

In practice the plug or stopper K is forced into the neck of the bottle in any desired manner, after which the bottle is filled with the required contents, and the stopper G is then inserted into the filling-orifice at the bottom thereof and forced into and through the tube (1, and in this operation the ends of the spring II are contracted or forced together, so as to permit the same to pass through said tube, and after the spring has passed through the ends thereof will expand, as shown in Fig. 1. In this position the plate 9 will rest upon the bottom of the bottle and it will be impossible to remove said stopper, substantially as shown and described. I

When it is desired to empty the bottle, the neck thereof is broken off above the plug or stopper K, and this may be done in any desired manner, and the said plug or stopper may then be withdrawn and the contents of the bottle discharged.

It will be apparent that the breaking off of the neck will be proof of the fact that the bottle has been once filled and emptied, and I may also place on that portion of the neck above the stopper of plug K a trade-mark or the name of the proprietor or manufacturer of the contents of the bottle, and the absence thereof will be further proof of the use of the bottle, and it will be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and which is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.
