SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,254, dated November 10, 1896.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, JAMES T. WVHITMORE, of Cleveland, Ouyahoga county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bookllolders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in book-holders; and it consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of a magazine or book to which my improved book-holder is applied. Fig. 2 is an end plan showing the lower edge of the book and the book-holder from below. Fig. 3 is a front or top side elevation of my improved book-holder. Fig. 4 is a righthand side elevation relative to Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is rear side elevation of the device. Fig. 6 is a transverse section on line 66, Figs. 3 and 4, looking upwardly. Fig. 7 is a transverse section on line 7 7, Figs. 3 and 4:, looking upwardly.

My improved book-holder is composed, preferably, of metallic pieces. A wire bent to form two parallel members A A, that are located a suitable distance apart, has its central portion a forming the lower end or handle of the bookholder. Two cross-bars B and B connect together and are suitably se cured to members A A. Gross-bar B is located, preferably, a short distance above the handle, and cross-bar B is located, preferably, near the upper ends of members A A. Each cross-bar B and B, at its central portion and forward side, has two forwardly-converging shoulders I) b, that are adapted to form a bearing for the back of the book held by the holder, and shoulders I) or shoulders 6 form the back-bearing for the book, according as the latter turns or swings laterally in the one direction or the other. Members A A and cross-bars B B therefore constitute a frame having bearings for the books back. An-

preferably, of a piece of wire that extends a suitable distance below the lower crossbar l3 and is long enough to render it capable, of being bent upwardly at a point below said cross-bar, and thereby forma spring-hook or spring-jaw (Z, adapted to enter the book to be held by the device and press the book against the backbearin g-formin g members of the book-holder.

A cylindrical tubular member E, arranged parallel with members D and A A, is soldered or otherwise rigidly secured to the rear side of said member D and the lower cross-bar B. lVithin tube E is journaled an oscillating leaf-holder that is composed, preferably, of a piece of wire G, having bearing in said tube E and extending below said tube and bent upwardly below the tube to form a springjaw g, adapted to enter between adjacent leaves of a'book and hold said leaves in place and provided at its upper end with two arms g g, projecting laterally in opposite directions, respectively, and adapted to engage and hold apart said leaves.

The leaf-holder G is movable endwise of the tube E, in which it is journaled, and is lowered to free the engaged leaves preparatory to turning one of said leaves, and is again elevated after the leaf has been turned to hold said leaf in place. The capability of the leaf-holder to oscillate accommodates the swinging of the'book laterally from shoulders or bearings 12 to bearings 12, or vice versa.

What I claim is 1. A book-holder comprising a frame providedwith bearings for the back of a book, and terminating, at its lower end, in a handle, and provided, furthermore, with a springhook or spring-j aw at the forward side and at or near its lower end, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A book-holder comprising two parallel members A A forming a handle at the lower end of the device, two cross-bars B 13 connecting together, and rigidly secured to, said parallel members and arranged asuitable distance apart above the handle and provided, on their forward sides, with bearings for the back of the book, and a suitably-formed spring-hook or spring-j aw at the forward side of the device above the handle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. A book-holder comprising two parallel members A A forming a handle at the lower end of the device, two cross-bars B B connecting together and rigidly secured to said parallel members and arranged a suitable distance apart above the handle and provided, on their forward sides and centrally, with two forwardly-converging bearings b b for the back of the book, and a suitably-formed spring-hook or spring-j aw at the forward side of the device above the handle, substantially as set forth.

4. A book-holder consisting of a wire bent to form the two parallel members A A and the handle a; the cross-bars B B connecting together, and rigidly secured to said parallel members, and provided, upon their forward sides, with bearings for the back of the book, and another wire extending centrally through said cross-bars and bent to form the springhook or spring-jaw d, all arranged and oper- .ating substantially as shown, for the purpose specified. 5. A book-holder comprising a frame provided with bearings for the back of a book, and terminating, at its lower end, in a handle, and provided, furthermore, with a jaw at or near its lower end and forward side, a cylin drical tube rigid with and arranged longitu dinally of said frame, and the oscillating leafholder comprising a member having bearing in, and movable endwise of, said tube, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

6. A book-holder comprising a cylindrical stationary tube arranged longitudinally of the device, an oscillating wire journaled in and movable endwise of said tube, and bent at a point below said tube to form the springjaw g, and the arms g g projecting laterally from opposite sides, respectively, of said jaw, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
