SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,244, dated November 10, 1896.

Be it known that I, JOHN C. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certainnew and usef Lil Improvements in Water-Closets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to certain improvements in water-closets of that class in which the hopper and flushing-rim are made of cast metal and internally enameled.

The object of the invention is to provide a cheap, durable, and in every way clean serviceable closet, particularly adapted for use in prisons, reformatories, factories, &c.

The invention consists in the combination, with a hopper or bowl of the ordinary type having a flushing-rim secured to the flanged mouth, of a cast-metal enameled seat so constructed as to rest upon and embrace the edges'of the hopper-flange and flushing-rim, to which it is securely attached by screws and bolts,all as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is avertical central sectional view of my combined hopper and seat, and Fig. 2 a plan view of the same.

A designates a cast-metal closet-hopper of a well-known type, having around its mouth an outwardl'y-projecting horizontal flange B.

O designates the flushing-rim, comprising the flat horizontal ring D and the dependingflange apron D, the lower edge of which, converging toward the inner surface of the hopper, is separated therefrom by the narrow space cl, through which the flushing-water flows. The outer edges of the hopper-flange and ring D are flush with each other and are slightly beveled outwardly from their upper surfaces, as shown in Fig. 1.

E designates the seat, consisting of a castmetal ring, the upper surface of which is curved to the usual or any preferred form of a closet-seat, the outer portion, as indicated at 0, being approximately a segment of a circle of considerably less radius than the curve of the seating portion d. The latter is cast as thin as properly admissible and forms an apron or shield overlapping and concealing the upper part of the flushing-rim, above which it is raised by the heavy thickened bosses (Z and is undercut or recessed at (i so as. to rest evenly upon the ring D of the flushing-rim, and is flanged at d to embrace the edges of the plate D and flange B of the hopper. When the flushing-rim and seat are in position, they are secured together and to the flange B of the hopper by screws f, in sorted through the under side of the hopperflange, and countersunk. The seat E is en-- ameled all over and is clean and comfortable. It will be seen that the construction and arrangement of the seat is such as to conceal all joints and make a very perfect finish. In this and all other respects the closet is strictly sanitary.

Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with the hopper or bowl of a water-closet, and the flushing-rim, attached thereto of a cast-metal, enameled seat, made separate from and secured to said hopper and flushing-rim and projecting inwardly so as to overlap and conceal the upper part of the flushing-rim,substantially as described. 2. A cast-metal enameled water-closet seat, in combination with a hopper having an out wardly-extending flange, and a flushing-rim having a horizontal flange resting on the hop per-flange, the said seatbeing formed with a thickened undercut base resting on the flange of the flushing-rim and a depending flange embracing the edges of the hopper and flushing-rim flanges, substantially as described.
