UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BEACH, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MALT-SHOVELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57.069, dated August 14, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it knownthat I, WILLIAM BEACH, of the city of Albany, State of New York, have invented a new and usefulMethod ofGonstructin g M alt-Shovels and I declare the following specification, with the drawings forming part of the same, to be afull and complete description of my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective front view of the shovel. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same.
Malt-shovels as usually made are wrought out of one solid piece of wood,;both handle and blade; hence, when one part is worn out or becomes unfit for use, the whole article is worthless and is thrown aside. Independently of any other injuries the shovel may sustain, theblade, from the nature of the material to be shoveled and from the harsh surface of malting-fl0ors, is liable to be rapidly worn out, so
that the supply of shovels for a malt-house is a large item ofits expense.
The design of my invention is to construct a shovel so as to permit the replacing of the blade without abandoning the handle, or the handle without the blade, and thus effect an important saving in the cost of a shovel.
The blade is secured to the cross or bed piece by small screw-bolts or rivets a a, which pass through metal straps b on the front of the handle and e on the back of the blade; also through the blade and the outer ends of,the
cross-piece at cl.
It will be seen from this mode of construction that when the blade becomes unserviceable it can be easily detached and a new one substituted for it, saving the waste of the handle, and, vice versa. a new handle fitted to the blade to take the place of a broken one.
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction of a wooden shovel by making the handle with a cross-bar separate from the. blade and fastening them together with screw-bolts or rivets and straps, so that they may be separated from each other, in the manner and for the purpose described.
