Description

(Model) H. VO'SBURGH.
- Snow Shovel, No. 239,205.
Patent ed March 22,188!
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
N PETERS, PHOTO-LITNOGRAPNE'R. WASHINGTON. DIG.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY E. VOSBURGH, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AN JOHN M. GANNIFF, OF SAME PLACE.
SNQW-SHOVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,205, dated March 22, 1881.
Application filed September 21, 1880. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. VosBUReH, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Sn0w-Shqvel, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved snow-shovel which is simple in construction, light, and durable, and is stiffened in at theirear.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved snow-shovel without a protected front edge. Fig.2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the front edge formed of a steel strip held between iron straps. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a shovel, with a modification of the wedge and of the front edge.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The rear edge of the board A is split longitudinally, and a wedge, B, is inserted between the two layers 0 and 1) of woodformed by splitting the board, for the purpose of stiffening the board and forming a strong rest for the end of the handle. The lower layer, D, is cut off flush with the rear edge of the wedge B; but the upper layer is carried beyond the wcdge,as shown. The point of the handle E is passed into an aperture in the rear side of the wedge, and is secured to the upper layer, 0, of the board A by the screws F F, bolts, or rivets. The wedge B is held to the two layers by screws or rivets. If desired, the inclined surface of the wedge B may be curved, as shown in Fig. 4, the upper layer, 0, being curved likewise.- The handle E is attached in the same manner as described above. The front edge is formed of a steel bar, J, held in a longitudinal slot, and by rivets G G, as shown in Fig. 4, or between two iron straps, H H, also secured by rivets G G.
By attaching sides to' the shovel, a grain and corn shovel is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wooden shovel having at the rear an up per split piece, 0, raised by a wedge, B, on the end of the handle, and a lower split piece, D, cut off flush with the rear of the wedge, the raised piece (3 being secured to the wedge and handle, substantially as shown and described.
HENRY E. VOSBURGH.
