MANIFOLD SALES-BOOK.

Beit known that I, WILLIAM D. BATES, of Grafton, in the county of Walsh and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Manifold Sales-"Book, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention isto provide a new and improved manifold sales-book arranged to transfer the written order to a duplicate slip adapted to be bound in the book` for future reference. v

The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of thev same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a plan view of the improvement in an open position and ready for making out the sales-slip. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the improvement, showing the first sales-slip removed and the rst duplicate slip folded up. Fig. 4 is a like view of the same with the cover swung upon the other side for making the entry of the sale on the removable slip. Fig. 5 is a like view of the same with the cover swung back in the opposite direction and showing the hinge-band engaging and holding the duplicate slip. Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing part of the hinge for the back and cover, and Fig. 7 is an enlarged elevation of the fastening device for the pad.

The improved manifold sales-book is provided with a back A, made of some suitable stiff material, and a cover B, made of a like material, the back and cover being pivotally connected with each other by two pairs of bands C O and D D', of which the bands O O are connected at their outer ends to the outer edge of the back A and at their inner ends to the inner edge of the cover B, and the other pair of bands, D D', are connected at their outer ends with the outer edge of the cover B and with the inner edge of the back A. By the arrangement described the cover B can be swung open either to the right, as Shown in Fig. l, or to the left, as illustrated in Fig. 4.

The bands C C are arranged near the top and bottom edges of the cover and the back, and the bands D D' are adjacent thereto, as plainly shown in the drawings. The bands C and D are preferably made of an elastic or longitudinally-extensible material, while the other bands, D and O', are preferably of braid, cord, or like material.

Upon the back A is held a pad E, provided with sales-slips E, ruled in the usual manner and preferably numbered consecutively, as indicated in the drawings. The sales-slips E are preferably perforated for removal from the pad, and to each sales-slip belongs a duplicate slip E2, onto which the matter written on the sales-slip is transferred by a carbon or other transfer sheet F, attached to the back of the pad, as indicated in the drawings. This transfer-sheet F is placed between the sales-slip E and the corresponding duplicate slip, so that the matter written on the salesslip is transferred to the duplicate slip.4 The upper or stub end of the pad E is fastened by suitable means to the back A, preferably by a clip G, made U-shaped and formed with flanges or otherwise attached to the back A, and pins II, driven into the sides of the slip to engage the sides of the stub of the pad.

On the inner face of the cover B is held, re* movably, a table I, ruled and consecutively numbered to receive the amounts of sales made during the day or week, to permit of conveniently footing up the total. The table I is preferably slipped at its edges under guides J, secured to the cover B, as plainly shown in Fig. 4.

The operation is as follows: Whenthe several parts are in the position as illustrated in Fig. 1 and the order written on the sales-slip E marked No. l, this order is copied on the iirst duplicate slip E2 by the transfer-sheet F. When the order is written, the sales-slip E is torn out of the book along its perforation and the transfersheet F is swung out- ICO ward to the right to permit the operator to fold the duplicate slip E2 upon itself in an upward direction, and when this has been done the operator swings this folded-up duplicate slip outward onto the back A to extend over the bands C. The operator now lifts the sales-slip E marked No. 2 to fold the transfer-sheet F onto the next duplicate slip for the sales-slip 2. The operator swings the coverB from the right to the left to close the book and to bring the band D over the folded-up duplicate slip No. l and the band D over the lower edge of the pad E. The 0perator then swings the cover to the left to the position shown in Fig. 4E to make the entry on the table I at No. l of the amount of the orden onthe iirst sales-slip.

It willbe seen. that during the swinging4 of the cover. Bate the lef-t the flexible band G is drawn out from under the upperend of theunused slips still remaining on the pad'. The operator closes the cover 1I` by swinging the sameback onto the pad.

When the book is opened for the second order by swingingthe cover to the riglitas shown in Fig. 5 the band C passes onto the upperend of the folded-up duplicate slip E2 to securely hold the same in place. The above-described operationr is then repeated, that is, thenext order is written on thesalesslip E?, and this slip is then removed and a duplicate sales-slip No. 2 is folded uponitself`and then swung outward to be finally brought under Iheband C onto the'frst duplicatesales-slip in the manner above speciied.

At the endk of a days work the duplicate slips can be swung from under the band C to copy the same in abook,.to compare thesame withy the sales-slips. Vhen the pad is used u p, a. new one canbe readily inserted by passing the stub end of the padunder the clip G and again. inserting the pins Il, as above dcscribed.`

It is understood that the clip Gis arranged in` such a manner on the back Avthat; sufficient space is left between the clip and the outer end of the back to permit of. swinging the doubled-up duplicate slipintothat space and leave the sales-slip completely unobstructed for writing inthe items, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 3 and 5.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A book, comprising two covers, pairs of crossed bands connecting the same and forming a double hinge as described, and a pad one end whereof is at a suitable distance from the adjacent pair of bands so that said pair of bandslwill engage the leaves ofl the pad when the leaves are folded upwardly or outwardly, substantially as set forth.
