lMPRQVEM ENT IN SMOKING-PIPES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,997, dated August 7, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Bonus Nonwoon, of the city and county of Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Smoking-Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in Which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the improved pipe when closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the pipe in a condition for use. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the pipe, having the stem detached from the tobacco-tube. Fig. 4 shows the invention applied to a common tobacco-pipe bowl.

This invention relates to tobacco pipes which consist of a straight bowl for containing the tobacco and a movable stem for forcing the tobacco toward the open end of said bowl and discharging the ashes.

One object of my invention is to so construct such pipes that they can be kept supplied with tobacco by introducing it at the rear end of the bowl or tube behind the lighted tobacco, for the purpose of obviating the necessity of relighting the tobacco every time the pipe requires recharging, as will be hereinafter described.

Another object of my invention is to provide for attaching a movable filtering-stem to the neck of a common pipe-bowl, so that this stem can be detached from the bowl at pleasure.

To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, 1 will describe its construction and operation.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents a hollow cylinder, of wood or other suitable substance, which has a hinged cap, a, with perforations through it, applied to one end, and a male screw-thread, I), cut on the opposite end, for receiving a cup or ring, B, that has a hole through its center.

0 represents the stem of the pipe, which may be made of several parts, 0 d e f, and constructed'with a condensing-chamber, d, at an intermediate point between the mouth-piece c and perforated cup f. This cup f is made somewhat larger in diameter than the hole through the screw-cup B, so that when the several parts of the pipe are put together, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the stem cannot be withdrawn or detached from the portion A without first removing the cap B. This cup f is screwed over the end of the stem 0, and forms a chamber for receiving some suitable substance for absorbing moisture. It also serves as a plunger or follower, for forcing the tobacco forward or toward the cap a and discharging the ashes when this cap is open. Said plunger also serves for cleaning the pipe after it has been used for a considerable length of time.

The tube 0, which passes through the screwcap B, may be made tapering toward the mouthpiece, a shown in Fig. 3, for the purpose of causing its enlarged end to fit snugly in the hole of the cap B when said stem is drawn out to its fullest extent.

If desirable, the stem may be made cylindrical, and a packing used at e for making a tight joint, whether the stem be in the position shown in Figs. 1 or 2.

In Fig. 4 I have represented the screw-cap applied to the neck of a common tobacco-pipe bowl. The neck D of the bowl D is bored out straight, so as to form a chamber, g, for receiving the plunger f. This plunger is applied to the stem 0, as described, for the stem 0, and is intended to serve as a means for containing an absorbent for preventing the saliva from the mouth from moistening the tobacco in the bowl D.

By unscrewing the cap B the stem 0 can be detached from the bowl and the chamber in the stem D cleaned out at pleasure.

It will be seen from the foregoing description that the stem 0 can be detached from the pipe A, and this pipe charged with tobacco, whether the tobacco which is in the pipe be ignited or not.

The great advantage of my invention is, that I make provision for introducing fresh tobacco at the breech or rear end of the pipe without the necessity of putting out the fire or discharging any of the tobacco which may be inthe pipe.

By this invention a person may continue smoking for a considerable length of time with a very small pipe, and always have fresh tobacco in his pipe.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A cap, B, constructed and applied to the stem and bowl of a pipe in such manner that the stem is connected by it to the bowl, and at will may be disconnected or adj ustcd, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination of a cap, a, cap B, and a sliding stem, 0, having a plunger applied to it, substantially as described.

3. The combination of a hollow plungerstem, 0, with a pipe having a detachable cap, B, substantially as described.
