UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEMI B. DENTON, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF'ONE-HALF TO ORIN A. WARD, OF SAME PLACE.
CASTER-CAS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,959, dated October 20, 1896. Application filed February 6, 1896. Serial No. 578,255. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEMI B. DENTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caster Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the manner of forming caster-cases; and its object is to provide a means of applying an ordinary track-plate to any desired form of tube. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of an ordinary open-top caster-case. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same with the track-plate shown in section. Fig. 3 is a plan of a case in which the tube is made with four radiating arms, by means of which it is secured to the track-plate. Fig. 4 shows two radial arms for the same purpose, and Fig. 5 shows the blank and detached tube for this style of case.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throu ghout the several views.
In constructing my caster-case I first form the tube D of the style desired, having a circular disk 0, as in Figs. 1 and 2, or radiating arms 0, as in Figs. 3 and 4, of a proper size to fit within the upturned serrated rim A of an ordinary track-plate. I then bend down one or more teeth of the track-plate over the edge of the disk or arms, as shown at a, and press them solidly upon said disk or arms. In this construction the track-plate may be left blank over the points where it is to fold over the disk or arms and serrated over the portion of the rim between such bearings, as
in Fig. A. \Vhen it is desired to apply this track-plate to the tube with only a narrow rim, all that is necessary is to make the trackplate enough smaller to correspond therewith.
The several advantages gained by this manner of constructing a caster-case are, first, that any form of flange may be used at the lower end of the tube for connecting it with the track-plate; second, that the center of the track-plate is left full and may be made with a pronounced convexity toward the floor, thus rendering it much better adapted to slide over the floor than the ordinary form of trackplate, and, third, it enables me to construct a closed-top tube of the form shown in Fig. 5 and attach a track-plate firmly to it in the manner shown, by which means the closedtop split tube herein shown is so firmly held to place at the lower end as to effectually avert the danger of spreading and splitting the wooden support to which it is applied.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent of the United States, is-
In a caster-case, a tube having radiating arms at the lower end, a track-plate having the outer rim turned up, and folded upon the rim of said track-plate to fit snugly over the edge of the radiating arms of the tube, and firmly connect the two, substantially as shown and described.
Signed at Grand Rapids, Michigan, February 1, 1896.
