Description

JONES & COLLINS.
'Aero Gas Burner.
WM f
i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
WM. JONES AND M. H; OOLLINS, OF CHELSEA, MASSAGHUSETTS.
IMPROVED AERO-GAS BURNER.
Speeiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,949, dated August 7, 1865.
To all whom 'it 'may cancer-n:
'Be it known that we, WILLIAM J ONES and MICHAEL HENRY GoLLINs, of Chelsea, in the county of Suli'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an improved Aero-Gas Burner 5 and we do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specilhaation and representcd in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top View, Fig. 2 a side eleva tion, and Fg. 3 a vertical section, of it.
The base part A of the burner We construct as a separate piece with reference to the body portion B, and connect the two by means of a male screw, a, and a female screw, b. Extending from the female screw in radial directions is a series of air-inlets, c c.
A (lischarge-passage, d, leads upthrough the bodyB and into a hollow dome or defiecting-Gap, C, provided with a series of cduction passages or holes, e e e, leading out of it near its base.
The lower part A of the hurner is made with or has a female screw,f, formed in it for the purpose of enabling it to be screwed upon a gas pipe or Conduit. From the space within the screw f a passage, `g, extends upward, and terminates in a smaller passage or hole, 76, leading out of the top of the screw a.
The hole his made so as to deternine the amount of gas which, under ordinary pressure, is to be adnitted into the passage (1..
By removing the cap C, which simply fits on the top of the part B as the cover of'a box is adapted to the body of such box, the ignited column of gas and air may be burned on the top of the part B; but when the eap 0 is in place on the part B the aero-gas column will be driven against the central part of the reflecting (lone C, and by it will be deflected to and be eaused to flow out of the several orifices e, where it may be infiamed. By such means the combustion will be spread and divided into numerous jets.
` The air to min le With the stream of gas,
When passing into the passage (Z, Will ente the holes c c, and pass into the space over th screw co, and from thence it will rush into th said passage d, when it will conningle witl the gas and may be burned with it at the plac or points of their diseharge.
By revolving the part B on the screw a w can entirely close the oriiices e c, or we ca open theni nore or less, so as to gage or dcte mine the amount of air wh ch it may be desh' able at any time to admit into the passage a The air and gas so mixed will burn with: blue fiame and give ont much more hoat tha can be obtained from the gas alone.
By screwng down the part B, so as to en tirely cover the air-inlets, no air will enter th burner, and consequently the' gas alone wil be inflamed on its top. Thus we are enable to employ the burner for the purposes oi' illu mination as well as those of heat.
We do not claim as our invention an aerc gas burner made with inlets for adnittim air to the gas after its introduction in: suc` bur-ner.
We claim- 1. Theimproved aero-gasburner-thatis, on as nade with or having a means ot' closin and more or less openiugits air inlet or inlets as specified. i
2. The eoubination of the removable defiem ing dome or eap O, made With eduction-or fices in it and near its base or lower Ddl'i with the aero-gas burner, as specified.
3. The peeuliar node, as described, in whic to construet the aerogas burne1'-,-\-'iz.,b v uni ing its two parts A B by screws a I), and a: ranging the air-inlet holes of the upper pa] A, with respect to such screws, in manner a specified.
