United States Patent 3,462,084 ADJUSTMENT FOR GAS BURNERS William N. Aleshin, 880 Main St., South Windsor, Conn. 06074 Filed June 8, 1967, Ser. No. 644,646 Int. Cl. Bb 7/06, 7/12 US. Cl. 239-431 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An air adjustment for gas burners, particularly for the well known type of burners using propane gas and including a burner unit that is attachable to a gas cylinder; said burner unit comprising a burner nozzle and a gas valve for controlling the supply of gas to the nozzle. Said nozzle has a finely adjustable air valve to control the amount of air supplied to a flame burning on the nozzle.
Background of the invention Known burner units for gas cylinders have means for admitting air to the nozzle but such means are not adjustable and it is highly desirable that finely adjustable means be provided to fully control the amount of air admitted in order to control the shape and intensity of the flame at the burner tip.
Summary of the invention In accordance with the present invention, a burner unit is provided with a finely adjustable air valve for regulating and controlling the supply of air to the burner nozzle.
The general object of the invention is to provide air adjustment means by which fine adjustments can be made for varying and controlling the amount of air supplied to a gas burner.
A further object is to provide an air controlling valve which can be easily installed on burner units of known type without requiring alterations of said unit.
A still further object is the provision of such an air valve which will cause any gas that may leak from the burner, as it enters the nozzle, to be mixed with the air supplied to the nozzle and thereby prevent the escape of said leaking gas into the atmosphere.
In accordance with these objects, the air valve is provided with a sleeve that is preferably threaded to an element of the known burner unit and is adapted to surround a portion of the nozzle for adjustably controlling the amount of air passing through air ports in said nozzle as clearly described herein and illustrated in the drawing.
Brief description of the drawing FIG. 1 is an elevational side view of a gas burner embodying the present invention.
FIG. 2 is an enlarged side view of the nozzle in central vertical section.
FIG. 3 is a sectional plan view on line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
Description of the invention As shown in the drawings, the gas burner unit comprises a gas valve 5 having a base 6, that is threaded to the stem 7 of a gas cylinder 8, and a knob 9 for operating said valve. A gas tube 10 is connected to the valve '5 by a suitable fitting 11 and a gas nozzle 12 is mounted upon the end of said tube.
The said nozzle includes a body portion 13, that is threaded to a screw thread 14 on the end portion of the tube 10, and an end portion 15 to which is threaded a burner tip 16 having a chamber 17 with a jet 18 and a series of holes 19 leading therefrom to the end of the burner tip, and a surrounding flame confining sleeve 20. The nozzle body 13 has an axial bore 21 with a threaded portion that engages the screw thread 14 adjacent the end of the gas tube 10.
The bore 21 communicates with the burner tip 16 through an axial gas passage 22 in the nozzle body 13; said body having a cylindrical portion 23 with a smooth outer surface and air ports 24 leading from said surface into the passage 22. It will be noted that the screw thread 14 extends along the end portion of the gas tube 10 for a substantial distance below the bottom of the nozzle body portion 13.
The gas burner of the construction just described is well known and the present invention is particularly directed to the provision of novel means which may be readily added to said construction for adjustably controlling the amount of air allowed to pass through the ports 24 into the passage 22 without requiring any alternation of the said known construction.
Said novel means consist of a valve sleeve 25 which closely surrounds the base portion 23 and is threaded to the portion of the screw thread 14, on the gas tube 10, which extends below the bottom of the nozzle portion 23. The sleeve 25 extends upwardly over the round portion 23 of the nozzle and is adapted to adjustably cover the ports 24 and thereby finely control the amount of air allowed to pass through said ports into the passage 22. A flange 26 is provided on the sleeve 25 to facilitate rotating same with the fingers for making an adjustment.
I claim:
1. In a gas burner having a gas tube with a screw thread on an end portion thereof, a nozzle with a smooth cylindrical end portion threaded to said screw thread and air ports in said cylindrical portion for admitting air into said nozzle, and an air adjustment including finely adjustable means for selectively controlling the amount of air admitted through said ports, said means compris ing a sleeve having an end portion threaded to said screw thread on the gas tube and spaced from the said end of the nozzle, said sleeve extending from said end portion thereof over and surrounding said cylindrical portion of the nozzle and being rotatable upon said screw thread for adjustably closing and opening said ports.
