UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BEN WHITELEY, OF STERLING, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO I. N. FORD, OF SAME PLACE.
HAIR-PIN AND BUTTON-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,144, dated October 6, 1896. Application filed April 17, 1896. Serial No. 587,937. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BEN WHITELEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Logan and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Pins and Button-Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hair-pins, and it has for its objects, among others, to provide a simple and cheap construction of hair-pin, embodying likewise a button-hook or glove-buttoner. It is designed, primarily, for use just prior to election times as a holder, by means of which a photograph of a favorite candidate or the emblem of a political party can be displayed. The shank portion is formed of a single piece of wire bentintothe required form, and is mounted for movement in guides on the back of the'emblem or photograph, and is adapted for use either as a pin or a button-hook, means being provided for limiting the movement of the pin in both directions.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated'in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a view of the improved pin shown applied to an emblem. Fig. 2 is a view of the other side, showing the buttonhook in position for use.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both the views.
Referring now to the details of the drawin gs by letter, A designates the combined pin and button-hook, which is formed of a single piece of wire of suitable size and length bent upon itself at the center of its length to form the hook B, the two arms of the wire adj acentto said hook being in close proximity to each other to give rigidity to the device at that point, and then one arm of the wire is bent at a right angle to its length, as seen at O, and thence parallel with the other arm to form the leg D, which with the other arm forms the hair-pin.
In practice the device may be thus used either fora hair-pin or a button-hook or glovebuttoner; but just prior. to election, or at any other such times as may be desired, it is designed to be used in connection with a picture of a favorite candidate or an emblem, as seen in Fig. 1, where E indicates the picture or emblem, on the rear face of which are the guides F, in which the device is mounted for limited play, being limited in the one direction by the right-angled portion 0 and in the other direction by the hook B, as shown.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed as new is-- The combination with a combined hair-pin and button-hook formed of a single piece of wire and having a lateral portion, of a device to which it is designed to be connected, the same having guides in which the pin portion is received and guided, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BEN WHITELEY.
