Description

w'. SMITH.
Bag Holden,
Patented July 31, 1866;

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEQ WM. H. SMITH,-OF SPARTA, WISCONSIN IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,819, dated July 31, 1866.
provements in Bag-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use the invention, I will proceed to describe it.
The drawing represents a side elevation of my improved apparatus, with a bag attached ready for filling.
A represents an upright post, of which either one or two may be used, it being secured to a platform, G, to keep it in position.
B represents a-sliding frame consisting oftwo longitudinal bars secured by crossbars a and 12, arranged as shown in the drawing, whereby they are made to look upon the post and support the frame B, as shown. The upper portions of the posts A are slotted, and a rod, a, is inserted through the frame B, and has its end resting in the slots p. A pin, a, passes transversely through holes in the posts A, to prevent the frame B from slipping down when adjusted at the proper height, the pin it in the drawing being represented as above the rod (6 simply because the latter is shown at the bottom of the slots 19. To this sliding frame B a hoop or band, E, is rigidly secured, of about the diameter of an ordinary grain-bag.
A funnel-shaped hopper, 0, having a .vertical rim, d, attached to its lower edge, is attached to the arms D, which are pivoted at l, so as to permit the hopper to be turned up, as shown in red.
To secure the bag, its upper end is inserted from below up through the hoop E, and then turned down over the upper edge of the hoop, as shown at z, the hopper being brought down, and causing its rim (1 to shut over the turneddown edge of the bag and the hoop E, thereby locking the bag F securely in place, when it can be readily filled by throwing the grain into the hopper G.
At the rear end the frame B is provided with two hooks, e, by which it may be hooked upon the edge of a bin or a plank standing edgewise and properly secured, thus dispensing with the platform G and supports A. A hinge, h, is also shown attached to the rear end of the frame B, by which it may be hinged to the bin or other support when it is desired to be used in one position, and then turned up out of the way when not in use.
A hook, f, is attached to the bar I for hanging steelyards to for weighing the grain or other material, the loop t serving to keep the beam in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The hoop E and hinged hopper 0, arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
WM. E. SMITH.
