Description

s. P.' CLEMONS.
. Bag Holder No. 85,643. 'PatentedJan. 5, 1869.
N. PETERS. PhuhrLRhugnphar, Wanhington, D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
S. P. CLEMONS, OF DANSVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED BAG-HOLDER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 85,643, dated January 5, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL P. GLEMoNs, of Dansville, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented a new and .valuable Improvement in Bag-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my device, and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are details.
My invention relates to devices for holding bags in the proper position for filling with grain or vegetable productions; and the object thereof is to provide for the use of farmers, millers, and grain -dealers a bag-holder that shall be more perfect in construction and operation than any similar device heretofore invented.
The letter A of the drawing represents an upright standard, to which are attached two legs, (marked 13,) adjusted in such manner that the feet or bottoms of the three shall form a triangle of which the upright standard forms the vertical side. I cut a mortise in the standard A above the junction of the feet, and affix over the lower part thereof a lip or block marked a, to aid in operating the devices hereinafter mentioned.
The letter O is an adjustable arm attached by a hinge to the top of standard A, as shown at c on the drawings.
The letterE represents a ratchet constructed in the form of the segment of a circle, its upper end being pivoted in a mortise cut in the arm 0, and its lower end passing through and operating in the mortise of the standard A, before mentioned. e
The letter F is a lever constructed in the form shown, its lower end being pivoted to the rear end of the ratchet E, and its upper end, after passing through the hook d, is made fast under the hook h when desirable, or is released therefrom at the pleasure of the operator.
The letter G is a funnel, the upper and lower ends of which are bell-shaped, as shown, and it is adjusted to the front end of the arm (3 by pivoting its flanges as represented.
The letter at is a plate attached to the lower side of the arm 0, its front end being cut out in a circular form, so as to clasp the funnel G in the manner shown.
The letter n represents a series of notches or hooks cut in the side of the front end of plate 1:, for the purposes hereinafter mentioned.
The letterg is a. wire bent in the form shown, so adjusted to one side of plate a as to form a pivot therein, and the other end bent down to form a hook that may be operated with the hooks u on the plate a. The front side of the lower end of the funnel G has a flange that extends outward about one inch, more or less, which is clasped by the bent wire y, one wire being above and the other below the same.
My device is operated as follows, namely: The bag is attached to the lower end of the funnel G by raising said funnel on its pivot, drawing the mouth of the bag thereon, and returning the funnel to its place. By this means the rear side of the bag is closely pressed between the lower end of thefunnel and the circular part of the plate a. 1. next draw the wire y around the front side f the bag, clasping the same firmly above and below the flange of the funnel, and securing itiu place by booking the hooked end of said wire upon one of the books, it. This process secures both sides of the mouth of the bag to the funnel. 1 next adjust the height of the funnel from the floor by means of the lever F and the ratchet E,
which, for convenience, should first be fixed on an angle of about forty-five degrees with the standard A, and the work of filling may be commenced. As the bag is being filled the funnel is raised, and with it the bag. This process of raising or lowering the bag is at all times within the power of the operator by means of the lever and ratchet above named, the ratchet working with the lip 01, as described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The ratchet E, combined with the lip a, lever F, arm 0, hooks d and h, and the hinge c, as described, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The pivoted funnel G, combined with the plate a, bent wire, as described, and the hooks u, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
