JAMES MELCHER, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
' Letters Patent No. 65,105, dated May 28, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-HOLDERS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY cononnn:
Be it known that I, JAMES MELOHER, of Minneapolis, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Bag-Holders; and I-declare the following to be a full, true, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents a sideelevation of my bag-holder. I
Letter. A represents the main upright shaft, which has for its support the ground-sills B B, and, to give it greater strength and security, the prop C. LetterD represents a cap-piece, which rests upon the main shaft A and the rod E. This cap-piece serves to retain the rod E in its proper place, and to prevent the coiled spring F which encircles the lower part of the rod E from raising the hopper too high. This spring should be of suflicient strength to keep the bag perfectly taut while it is being filled, and pliable enough at the same time to allow the hopper to give, so as to relieve some of the strain from the mouth of the bag as the weight increases. Letter G represents a. support on which the rod E rests, and in order to make this support firm and strong the upright braces H have been added. Letter I represents the hopper, through which the grain passes into the bag. This hopper is secured to therod E by means of the perforated arms L L, which play upon this rod and are fastened to the back of the hopper I. The lower part of the back is hinged on, so as to allow it to play backwards and forwards by means of the spring M, and the lower end, at N, is covered with leather or canvas so as to allow the hopper to be adjusted to any sized bag. Upon the back and front parts of the hopper there are a number of small hooks for thepurpose of fastening the bag while it is being filled. The mouth of this hopper should be made sufiiciently large to allow the grain to be thrown in by shovels or to be poured in from measures. The perforated arms L L can be used in two ways: firstly, in the manner already shown; secondly, they can be used independently of the frame, by so bending their ends that the hopper can be suspended from the side of the grain-bin. Letter 0 represents a bag, and shows the manner in which it is to be attached to the hopper.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Constructing the lower part of hopper I with a hinged sidefand connecting said side to the opposite side of the hopper by means of a flexible material in order that it may accommodate itself to the mouth of the bag, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with the hinged side and flexible material, Iclaim spring M, for the purpose of retaining the mouth of the-bag open toits greatest extent, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- I JAMES MELCI-IER.
