No. 568,134. Patented Sept 22, 1896- I Q I l D a l l f l l I & 23 H '1 a v are awk GEORGE V. GABLE, OF LUZERNE, PENNSYLVANIA.
NURSERY-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,134, dated September 22, 1896. Application filed July 21, 1896. SeriaINo. 600,012. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GABLE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Luzerne, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nursery-Chairs; and
. I do declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in nursery-chairs for children, and the object is to provide a simple, cheap, and convenient device of this class; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly point-ed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same figures of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved nurserychair. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same converted into a crib. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing the commode attachment, and Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the chair.
1 1 are the usual legs, provided with rungs 2 2 and side bars 3 3. l
at 4 are C-shaped springs, the lower ends of which are secured to the side bars 3 3 on each side, and their upper ends are fastened to the seat 5, WlllGlllS formed with a central orifice 6, provided with a cover 7, secured to the seat by hinges S 8.
9 9 are the standards located on each side of the seat, and to their upper ends are fastened the arm-rails 10 10. .To the forward end of the arm-rail 10 is hinged by a bolt 12 one arm 13 of the box 14:, extending across the front of the chair, where its opposite arm 15 is removably secured to the opposite arm-rail 10 by a thumb-screw 16. This box is provided with a hinged cover 17, the top of which forms a table from which the child may be fed or amuse itself with its toys, while the boX itself forms a convenient receptacle for the toys when not in use.
18 represents the back of the chair secured to the seat 5 by hinges 19.
20 20 are thumb-screws secured to the armrails, and they pass through a slot 21 in the side plates 22 22, the outer ends of which. are pivoted by a screw 23 to the posts 24 2t of the back. As shown in Fig. 1, the back is adjusted and held close to the arm-rails by said thumb-screws, and by loosening the thumb-screws the back can be tilted or inclined rearwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, to form the head portion of an extensible bed or crib. The side plates 22 22 form an extension or continuation of the arm-rails, and the two together form sides to the bed or crib to prevent the child from rolling out.
The foot-board 25 is pivoted to the front edge of the seat 5 by hinges 26, and to the front end of said foot-board is secured a footrest27 by hinges 28. The edge 35 of this rest 27 projects below the foot-board 25 when the parts are positioned as in Fig. 2, and to the said edge 35 is pivoted one end of a lever 29, the free end of which is formed with a recess 7 30, which engages one of the front rungs of the chair and supports the board 25 in a horizontal position to form the foot portion of an extension-bed. At the same time the rest 27 is supported in an upright position to form the foot-board of the bed or crib. As shown in Fig. 1, this may be folded down out of the way to allow the use of the stationary footrest 31. V
32 is a stationary receptacle located immediately below the chairseat and secured thereto. It is provided with a hinged door 33 in its rear end, whereby convenient access may be had thereto.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from thespirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invent-ion, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is I A nursery-chair of the class described, comprising the legs 1 1, the side bars 3 3, the seat 5, and the C-shaped springs connecting the side bars and the seat, the cover 7 secured to the seat by hinges, and the back hinged to the seat and provided with the pivoted plates 22 22, provided with slots 21, and pivoted to said hinged back, the arm-rails 1O lOseoured adapted to engage one of the front rungs of to said seat by the standards 9 9 and provided the chair, substantially as shown and do- With the thumb-screws 20 20 passing through scribed.
the slots 21 to adjustably secure said plates In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my 5 and hinged back to the arm-rails, in combisignature in presence of two Witnesses.
nation with the foot-board 25 hinged to the seat and the foot-rest 27 hinged to the front GEORGE \V. GABLE. end of said board 25, the lever 29 pivoted to \Vitnesses: the projecting edge 35 of said rest 27 and FRANK BENNER,
10 having its free end formed with a recess 30, WV. J. PARRY.
