Description

(No Model.)
w. H. MQDONALD.
BOTTLE.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM HUGHES MCDONALD, or REDLANDS, CALIFORNIA,
SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patent No. 568,037, dated September 22, 1896.
' Application filed December 18, 1895. Serial No. 572,028. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HUGHES Mc- DONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Redlands, in the county of San Bernardino and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bottles, having for its objects, amon g others, to provide a simple and cheap bottle which cannot be refilled without detection, and so constructed as to prevent re: moval of the cork without defacing the label. The cork cannot be inserted farther or drawn out without breaking the cord or other connection with the button or tearing the'salne from its position under the label. The cork, cord, and button can be sealed in place.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the bottle constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the cork d'etached.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, Ais the body, and B the neck.
- This neck is reinforced, as shown at b, and extending through the neck down the side of the bottle is a groove 17, which extends also through the top of the neck, as shown. The lower end of this groove terminates in an indenture or depression a in the side of the bottle.
O is a cork, and D is a cord passed around and secured to said cork near its upper end, being held preferably in a groove 0 therein, and the other end of the cord has aff xed thereto in any suitable mannera button or private seal E, as shown. When the bottle is filled,
the cork is placed in position, the cord or button or private seal seated in the indenture or recess in the side of the bottle. A label 9 is then pasted upon the face of the bottle, which may be flattened for this purpose, as shown, and this label covers the space and the cord, the groove or indenture or depression, and the private button or seal. The cord and seal are thus hidden from View and the cork cannot be inserted farther or drawn out without breaking the cord or other connection or tearing the same from its position under the label.
Modificationsin detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim as new is r V 1. A bottle having a reinforced neck, provided with a groove transversely thereof and also downward toward the bottom of the bottle and terminating in a depression in the side of the bottle, substantially as shown and clescribed.
2. A bottle having a reinforced neck, pro- I.
vided with a groove transversely thereof and, also downward toward the bottom of the bot? tle and terminating in a depression in the side of the bottle, combined with a cork having a ligament secured thereto and passed through the horizontal groove and down the vertical groove in the enlargement of the neck, and a private seal carried by the ligament and seated in said depression, substantially as .shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WVILLIAM- HUGHES MCDONALD.
Witnesses J. E. DUGAN', E. G. J UDSON.
