Description

G. E. LUCE. VEIL FASTENER.
(No Model.)
Patented Sept. 15,-1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES ELMER LUOE, OF STUTTGART, GERMANY.
VElL-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 567,907, dated September 15, 18961.
Application filed May 15, 1896. Serial No. 591,721. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES ELMER Loon, of Stuttgart, in the Kingdom of Wiirtemberg and German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Veil- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to veil-fasten ers, and its object is to provide a new and improved fastener which is simple and durable in construction and will allow of securing the veil nicely and easily without any loss of time. By the use of my improved fastener about one-third of the textile material of the veil otherwise required for knotting the same at the back of the head can be saved, and the danger of tearing the veil is obviated.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved veilfastener, showing in dotted lines the parts of which it is formed in their assembled state. a perspective view of the said parts dissembled, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation ofone of the hollow plugs for bold ing the ends of the veil.
A is a tube or socket of metal, hard rubber, celluloid, or other suitable material, and B B are hollow plugs, having preferably open conical ends 0 with holes d. Said plugs are made to fit nicely into the socket A, so that after being inserted therein they cannot well come out of the said socket unless by the exertion of manual force. I prefer to flatten one of said plugs a little or to make it somewhat larger than the other, so as to obtain a tighter lit at one end of the socket A, as will be readily understood. In some cases I provide the plugs with flanges Ct to prevent them from being pushed too far into the socket A and to bear against the end of the same.
In preparing the veil for appliance the ends at each side of the veil D are taken together in the usual manner and preferably on wrapped with the thread and then pushed through the hollow plugs 13 B, wherein they may be fastened by stitching, the sewingthread being passed through the apertures d Fig. 2 is in a well-known manner. In applying the veil for use I insert one of the plugs B or B, holding the same, into the socket A and then arrange the latter in an approximately hori zontal position behind the head of the wearer, whereupon the other or opposite plug will be inserted intothe socket from the other or opposite side, so as to hold the veil in position before the face.
I wish it to be understood that I do not confine myself to the particular forms of the plugs and socket as illustrated in the drawings, nor to the employment of apair of plugs, since I may in some instances, without deviating from the nature of my present inven* tion, affix one end of the veil to the said socket direct and apply one plug only for fastening the veil, as will be readily understood.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-' 1. A fastening device consisting of a socket, a hollow plug having one end of the article to be fastened inserted therein, said plug being adapted to fit directly in said socket, and means for attaching said socket to the other end of the article to be fastened.
2. In a fastening device, the combination of a socket, disconnected plugs adapted to fit in said socket, and means for attaching said plugs to an article to be fastened.
3. In a fastening device, the combination of a cylindrical socket, free plugs adapted to be inserted in said socket, apertures in said plugs, and flanges disposed on said plugs for regulating the insertion of said plugs into said socket.
4. In a veil-fastener the combination, with the socket A, of the hollow plugs B B fitting therein and provided with the apertures cl for affixing the end of a veil.
5. In a veil-fastener the combination, with the cylindrical socket A open at both ends, of the hollow tapering plugs BB open at both ends and having the apertures d.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
