United States Patent U.S. CI. 24-49 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device which is ornamental in appearance but will firmly hold a sailors kerchief in place allowing all the men to present a uniform and neat appearance. This device can be used in pairs on a single navy kerchief and allow the kerchief to remain intact and it can be slipped on and off without presenting an undesirable appearance. The device consists of a hollow cylinder of a dark plastic and a pair of perforated discs which receive the kerchief in the openings of the discs and from the holes the cloth ot the kerchief is placed within the cylinder, the disc being received, one in each end of the cylinder. The smaller cylinder is designed with the loop portion at the back of the wearer, while the larger cylinder is carried on the front of the wearer.
This invention relates to knotting devices for ties and the like, and more particularly to a retaining device for navy kerchiefs.
It is therefore the main purpose of this invention to provide a navy kerchief retaining device which will be used in pairs to neatly and uniformly hold the navy kerchief or the like in place on the wearer.
Another object of this invention is to provide a navy kerchief retaining device which will enhance the appearance of the wearer by being ornamental as well as eiTectively holding the cloth of the kerchief in place and will allow the kerchief to be removed from the neck of the wearer without untying the cloth portion of the kerchief.
A further object of this invention is to provide a retaining device for navy ker-chiefs and the like which will have a disc with a central opening, the discs being used in pairs, one to be received in each end of the cylinder to form the hold of the cloth of the kerchief and keep it in place.
Other objects of this invention are to provide a retaining device for navy kerchiefs which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily apparent upon a study of the following specification together with the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of the present invention showing the navy kerchief in phantom lines with the lower member shown partly broken away;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged end view of the device of FIGURE 1 shown in elevation;
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of FIGURE 2 shown exploded;

According to this invention, a navy kerchief retaining device 10 is composed of a colored plastic cylinder 11 having an S-shaped locking slit 12 extending from end to end. The locking slit 12 provides a means of allowing cylinder 11 to be expanded when desired. The bore 13 of cylinder 11 allows for the passage of loop 14 of kerchief 15 and a pair of discs 16 are provided with a central opening for also receiving the cloth portion of kerchief 15. Disc 16 is of such diameter that it can be received within the bore 13 of each end of cylinder 11 in order to firmly secure the kerchief 15.
Looking now at FIGURE 4 of the drawing, one will see a cylinder 11 having a bore 13 which receives disks 16' having central openings 17'. Cylinder 11 receives the kerchief 15 at the front of the wearer and ends 18 of kerchief 15 depends downwards at the ends of cylinders 11.
It will be noted that with the use of cylinders 11 and 11' the kerchief 15 will always look neat and perfectly tied so as to allow sailors to present a uniform appearance. It will also be noted that with the use of this invention, it will save considerable time when tying the kerchief.
It shall further be noted that the use of the device herein described may be applied to civilian-type neckwear as well as to navy kerchiefs.
What I now claim is:
1. A kerchief retaining device, comprising, in combination, a tubular plastic cylinder having a central opening extending therethrough so as to receive said kerchief in a rolled condition therethrough, a pair of circular disks, each of said disks having a central opening therethrough for receiving said kerchief, each of said disks being receivable in opposite ends of said cylinder and retained therein by friction means, said friction means comprising said cylinder having a slit extending from one end to the other end thereof, said slit at its mid-portion being of S configuration whereby said mid-portion of said cylinder is not expandable whereas the opposite end portions of said cylinder are readily expandible so as to frictionally receive said disks, said S configuration of said slit accordingly comprising a pair of inter-fitting tongues which prevent separation.
