SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,831, dated September 15, 1896. Application filed October 10, 1895. Serial No. 565,249. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, J AMES STEPHEN How: and WILLIAM WILSON ELDRED, of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to wearing-apparel; and its object is to provide certain new and useful improvements in suspenders, whereby the suspenders can be conveniently attached to or detached from trousers and allowed free movement of the wearers body from side to side without much strain or pull on the shoulders.

The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of the shoulder-strap, buckle, hook, and ring; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. i is an enlarged sectional view taken through the buckle in the plane indicated by the line 4 t in Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken through the buckle in the plane indicated by the line 5 5 in Fig. 2.

The improved suspenders, as shown in Fig. l, are provided with shoulder-straps A, made of leather or other suitable material, and carrying at their front ends buckles B, each of which is formed with a hook 0, adapted to be engaged by a loop D, held on a ring E, through which passes the corresponding suspenderend F, adapted to be buttoned upon the buttons G of the trousers. The rear ends of the shoulder-straps A are connected with the sides of a triangular extension H, formed on the shank of a hook 1, adapted to be engaged by a ring J, connected by short straps K with loops L,held on a second set of rings N,through which pass the two suspender-ends F at or near their rear ends. Each buckleB is formed of a loop or frame of wire comprising upright side portions 1) b, a horizontal bar I) at the upper ends of said side bars, and a lower crossbar b at the lower ends of said side bars,

said lower cross-bar being bent downwardly at its central portion, as indicated at 19 to form a depending extension, the lower extremity of which is bent upwardly, as seen at 19*, to form a hook to receive the eye or loop D. The brace-bar c is extended across the upper portion of the buckle B, being formed of sheet metal having its opposite edges turned up or flanged and having its opposite ends provided at their upper and lower sides with arms 0, each of which is bent aroundthe adjacent side bar I) of the buckle B. Theloops formed by said arms 0' are spaced apart, as clearly seen in Figs. 2 and 4, and between said arms each side bar I) is bent outwardly, as clearly seen at b in Figs. 3 and 4, to form a stop to prevent movement of the brace-bar c on said side bars I). At its central portion the brace-bar c is provided with an extension 0 projecting from one side, as indicated in the drawings, and said extension is bent to form the loop seen in Figs. 2 and 3, in which is held a bent metal locking-plate 0 the ends of which extend into engagement with the upper cross-bar b of the buckle B, and are adapted to pass through apertures in the straps A. V

The opposite side portions of the depending extension 19 of the buckle are connected bya brace-plate d, the opposite ends of which are bent, as indicated at CZ in Figs. 2, 3, and 5, around said side portions of the extension 11 While the central portion of said plate extends forward and then downward, as clearly seen at (Z in Fig. 3, being reduced at its lower end to form a spring adapted to retain the loop D in place when inserted in the hook 32 Now it will be seen that by the construction described each of the suspender-ends F engages the rings E and N, of which the ring E is suspended from the buckle B at the front end of the shoulder-strap A,.and the other ring N is suspended from the hook I, connected with the rear ends of the shoulderstraps. A third ring 0 engages each suspender-end F between the rings E and N', but nearer to the ring E, and this ring 0 isprovided with aloop P, held on a strap Q, buckled to another button G on the trousers. Now it will be seen that by the arrangement described the wearer can move his body from side to side without much strain on his shoulders, as the suspender-ends F readily adjust themselves in the rings E, O, and N to permit sidewise movement of the body without strain on the shoulder-straps and the shoulders of the wearer. It will further be seen that by the arrangement described the loops D and the ring J can readily be detached from the hooks C and I, respectively, so as to disconnect the shoulder-straps from the trousers and without detaching or unbuttoning the suspender ends from the buttons of the trousers. By having the extension I-I made triangular in form the shoulder-straps A diverge in the proper direction from the middle of the Wearers back to the shoulders, and at the same time the base of the extension forms a continuation of the shank of the hook I, so that this part of the suspenders can be cheaply manufactured. Moreover, the eX- tension holds the shoulder-straps at a proper angle. The hook I also forms a pivotal connection between the shoulder-straps A and the diverging extension-straps K, thereby allowing of an easy lateral motion of the said straps.

Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Suspenders, comprising shoulder-straps converging at the rear, extension-straps independent of each other, each of said extension-straps being pivotally connected to the rear ends of the shoulder-straps and diverging from each other, and suspenderends adapted to be fastened to a pair of trousers and loosely connected to the front ends of the shoulder-straps and .to the lower ends of the extension straps, substantially as described.

21 In a buckle, the combination of aframe comprising side bars and cross-bars, the lower cross bar having its central portion bent downwardly and then upwardly to form a hook, and a brace formed of sheet metal and having loops at its opposite sides embracing the sides of the depending portion of the frame, said brace having a projecting central portion bent forwardly between the sides of the depending portion of the frame and downwardly and arranged to engage the hook at the lower end of said depending port-ion of the frame, substantially as set forth.
