CIRCULAR TRACK CR COURSE.

Be it known that I, GEORGE V. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Circular Tracks or Courses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements. in the construction of circular tracks or courses of boards or planks, the objects of which are to provide or construct a circular track or course for bicycle-ridin g and other riding and racing purposes of boards or planks, their length extending with and sufficiently conforming to the course of the track or course, and in which the end joints of the boards or planks may alternate in placing them in position upon the stringers or supports. I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of one of the boards or planks marked for sawing, (A,) sawed, (B and 0,) and placed in condition for placing in position in the track or course to form a section thereof, (C BL) Fig. 2 is a View of a portion of the track or course with sections fastened in position upon suitable stringers or supports D, the joints or points of junction of the boards or planks at the ends alternating upon the supports or stringers.

In the construction of the track or course the lumber, boards or planks, is prepared for laying in the track by being sawed or separated upon a circular line extending through the length of the board or plank, said line conforming to the degree of the circle of that portion of the track or course to be covered by the particular board or plank, as shown in Fig. 1, by which two pieces are formed with two straight sides and two circular sides, one forming the inn er and the other the outer Ycircle of a section of said track or course, as shown in B and C of Fig. 1. The position of the two sections B and C are then reversed as to the position they occupied in the board or plank originally, the two straight sides being placed together, whereby a complete section of the track or course is formed, as shown in B C of Fig. 1. The ends of the board or plank are then sawed off upon a bevel line to tit or conform to the degree of the decreasing diameter of the track or course, as shown by the dotted lines across the ends of C Bin Eig. 1. The completed sections are `then laid upon suitable stringers or supports D, placed across the course of the track or course, the end joints alternating upon the stringers or supports D, and are fastened in place With nails, screws, or other suitable means, as shown in Fig. 2. By this method a track or course may be constructed of boards or planks of any desired circle or with straight-away stretches and circular turns at the corners, the grain of the boards or planks sufficiently conforming to the course of the track or course as not to impede the course or speed of a bicycle or other vehicle passing over it.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- In the construction of a circular track or course ofboards or planks, the sections formed by separating the boards or planks of which the surface is constructed throughout their length upon a circular line conforming to the desired degree of circle of the portion of the track or course in which the particular board or plank is to be used and reversing the position of thevseparated pieces of the board or plank, placing the straight sides thereof together to form a complete section of said track or course, substantially as described and shown.'
