SAW-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,3 92fdated March 11, 1902.
Application filed May 14 1901. Renewed February 11, 1902. Serial No. 93,646. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ROBERT HAW- KINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vicksburg, in the county of Warren and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Handles, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to handles for saws, and particularly to what are known as crosscut-saws; and the object thereof is to provide a handle for a saw of this class which is strong-and durable, that part of the handle with which the sawis'connected being made of metal and being provided with improved means for securing the saw thereto.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification,of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the sepa rate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved handle and showing one end of a saw connected therewith; Fig. 2, a View at right angles to Fig. 1, part of the handle being shown in section; and Fig. 3, a bottom plan view thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide a tubular handle 5, preferably composed of wood, and through which ispassed' a metal shaft 6, the lower end of which is enlarged, as shown at 6, and split to form a longitudinal slot 7, through which the saw 8 is passed. The side portions 9 of the shaft 6, which pro ject below the tubular handle 5, are also provided with longitudinal slots 10 at right angles to the slot .7, and through these slots are passed two bolts '11, one of which passes through the end of the'saw and the other of which, in the form of construction shown in the drawings, is placed justvbelow the saw, so as to securely bind the saw in position. It
will be understood that-one of these handles is or may be connected with one or both ends of the saw, and my invention is not limited to the arrangement of the bolts 11. herein shown and described, as one of said bolts may be placed above instead of below the saw or both of said bolts maybe passed through the saw. In the form of construction shown the shaft 6 is provided just above the slotted portion thereof with ahead or annular flange 12, I I
and between such flange and-a. screw-nut 13, screwed firmly in place upon the upper 'end of such shaft 6, the tubular handle 5 is secured; but other sufficient devices or means may be employedto secure such tubular handle thereon. y This construction forms a strong and durable handle for the saw and one with which the saw may be oonnected in such manner that the saw will not work loose or be detached from the handle.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isg 1. A handle for saws comprising a tubular member, a metal member passing there through and projecting at one end therefrom, the projecting portion-of-the metal member member, a metal member passing there 'through'and projecting at one end therefrom,
the projecting portion .of the metal member being provided with a longitudinal slot adapt= ed to receive one end of the saw and atright angles thereto with other slots and bolts passed therethrough, one of saidbolts being also passed through the saw, substantially as shown and described. 1
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres- I ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 3d day of May, 1901.
GEORGE ROBERT HAWKINS.
