To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLIE A. Hones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blackhawk, in the county of Carroll and State of 5 Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Plow-Handle, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows, and has for its object to provide an improved handle therefor which is longitudinally adjustable, so as to accommodate the same to operators of different heights. It is furthermore designed to have the adjustable parts rigidly connected, so as to prevent looseness thereof I occasioned by wear, and also to provide for rendering old plo w-handles adjustable as well to provide entirely new handles.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings,and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion,
size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective 0 view of a plow provided with the improved adjustable handles. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal sectional view taken through the opposite members of a pair of handles constructed in accordance with the present in- 5 vention. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken through one member of an old handle, showing the manner of applying the adjustable feature thereto. Fig. t is a detail transverse sectional view taken on the line 4 at of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of one of the wear-plates for the adjustable handlesections.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings there has been illustrated a plow-beam 1, having the usual standard 2, carrying a plow 3, and the opposite handle members 4, which are connected to the rear end of the beam and the standard in any suitable or common manner. These parts are shown to more adequately illustrate the application of the present invention, and therefore may have any desired form.
In carrying out the invention there are provided the opposite adjustable handle-sections 5, which are formed of wood or metal and provided at their outer ends with the usual bowed hand-grips 6. These handle-sections and their connections with the fixed sections are duplicates, and therefore a description of one member is deemed suflicient.
When constructing new handles, the fixed orinner sections are made of suitable lengths without hand-grips at their outer ends and are provided with corresponding intermediate longitudinal slots 7 for the reception of the opposite ends of a transverse brace-rod 8. This rod has its opposite ends projected at suitable distances through the slots and also screw-threaded for the reception of the respective pairs of nuts 9 and 10, embracing the respective handle'sections, so as to prevent endwise displacement of the rod. The outer extremities of the handle-sections are provided with corresponding perforations or openings 11 for the reception of the opposite screw-threaded ends of a transverse bracerod 12, and the latter is provided with the opposite pairs of nuts 13 and 1-t, as and for the So purpose set forth for the former rod.
Each adjustable handle-section is provided with a transverse perforation or opening 15 in its inner end for the reception of the adjacent projecting end of the transverse rod 8, and the adjacent pair of nuts bear against the inner side of the fixed section and the outer side of the adjustable section, so as to connect the two sections, and by manipulating the opposite pairs of nuts the opposite outerhandlesections maybe adjusted longitudinally upon the fixed sections by adjusting the rod 8 longitudinally along the corresponding slots 7. The handle-sections are furthermore held together by means of the substantially U- shaped metallic clips 16, each of which has an intermediate perforation for the reception of the rod 8, with its opposite sides or arms embracing the top and bottom edges of the sections, and is clamped against the inner side of 17 for the reception of the adjacent project- I ing end of the rod 12, upon which the adjacent sections are clamped by the adjacent pair of nuts in the manner described for. the inner end of the adjustable section. Aslotted metallic wear-plate 18 is applied to the outer side of the adjustable section so that its slot corresponds to the slot of the section and is provided with pairsof terminal ears 19, projecting in the same direction from the opposite longitudinal edges of the plate and embracing the top and bottom edges of the handle-sections, so as to form additional braces therefor. Suitable fastenings 20 are driven through the ears and into the adjustable section, so that the plates are carried by said adjustable sections and are removable there-' with without removing any'other fastenings. It will beunderstood that these plates strengthen the slotted portions of the handlesections and also take the wear of the outer nuts 14.
From the foregoing'descr-iption it will be understood that the inner ends of the adj ustable sections are provided with fastening devices that are slid-ably received Within the slotted portions of the fixed sections, said fastenings being the ends of the rod 8, while the outer ends of the fixed sections are provided with fasteningsviz., the ends of the rod 12 which are slidably adjustable in the slotted portions of the adjustable handle-sections.
By this arrangement the handles may be adjusted longitudinally, and at the same time the sections thereof are rigidly connected and braced, so as to prevent looseness.
In applyingthe present invention to old plow-handles which are connected by-means of one ormore transverse braces 21, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, one handle member only being shown, the bolts 22 and 23 take the place of the rods 8 and 12, respectively, the other parts being exactlythe same. Thus the only change required in the old handles is to cut off the grip portiousthereof and provide each section with a longitudinal slot 7, as described in thefirst form of the invention. It will now be understood that the fastenings 22 and 23 correspond to the fastenings formed by the ends of the rods 8 and 12.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with inner fixed plowhandle sections,*having corresponding longitudinal slots, and laterally-projecting fastening devices, of opposite outer adjustable handle-sections, which have corresponding longitudinal slots for the adjustable reception of the respective fastenings of the fixed sections; and also lateially-projectingfasten ings adjustably received within the respective slots of the fixed sections.
,2. The combination with an inner fixed plow-handle section, having a laterally-projecting fastening device, of an outer longitudinally-adjustable handle-section, having a longitudi nal slot adjustably'receiving the fastening, and a wear-plate secured to the outer side of the adjustable section, and having a slot correspondingto the slot in the fixed handle-section, and pairs of laterallyrprojectin g ears embracing-the opposite sides of the two handle-sections.
3. The combination with longitudinally-adjustable plow-handle sections-,havingta slotand-bolt adjustable connection, of a substantially U-shaped metallic clip which is independent of the handle-sections, embraces the overlapped portions of the handle-sections, and is provided withan intermediate perforation receiving the bolt, the intermediate portion of the clip being held between one of the handle-sections and the adjacent head of the bolt, whereby. the clip is carried by and is adjustable with the bolt.
'4. The combination with opposite inner fixed plow-handle sections having corresponding intermediate longitudinal slots, and a transverse brace-rod connecting'the outer ends of the sections and projecting at the outer sides thereof, of opposite outer longitudinally-adjustable handle-sections, having outer terminal hand-grips, intermediate correspondinglongitudinal slots adjustably receiving the respective projecting ends of the brace-rod, a transversebrace-rod connecting the inner ends of the adjustable sections, passing adj ustably through the correspondingslotsof the fixed sections and projecting beyond the adjustablesections, andpairs of nuts fitted to the ends of both rods and adjustably embracing the respective handlesections.
