PATENT OFFICE.
STONEWALL W. J. STONE, OF HANNAH, SOUTH CAROLINA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '7 55,959, dated March 29, 1904.
Application filed October 21, F902. Serial No. 128,141. (No model.)
-To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SToNEWALL W. J STONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hannah, in the county of Florence and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and particularly to plow-stocks and to the attachments adapted to be used with the plow-stock; and among the objects in view is to provide a plow of simple, strong,
and inexpensive construction.
The invention consists in the novel construc tion, arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims. A
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved plowcomplete. is a similar view showing an ordinary turnplow attached to the stock. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the helve or standard detached. Fig. 4 is a similar view of a brace for the helve or standard. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the bar S and the connection betweensaid bar and the, ploivbeam. Fig. 6 is a de: tail view of the plate V. Fig. 7 is a detail view of a turn-plow adapted for use with my plow.
In the drawings, A indicates my improved plow, and the same comprises the usual plowbeam B and helve or standard C, handles D,
brace E, bar F, and adjustable connection G. The beam B is provided at a point intermediate its length with a hole, and the handles are provided with perforations I and through which latter and the said hole a bolt K passes, whereby to secure the handles to the beam. The standard C is constructed as shownthat is to say, it is at the upper end constructed to form an enlarged head 0, which is provided with a recess C lying between the lateral flanges or extensions C and in which recess the beam B is adapted to snugly fit, as seen in Fig. 1. Threaded bolts L passdownwardly through the beam B into openings C in the standard, to thus firmly secure the standard to the beam. The standard is provided in that portion below the head with a slot M. To
Fig. 2.
further brace and strengthen the connection between the beam and standard, I employ a brace E, shaped as shown, one end of which enters the slot M of the standard and is provided with an eye O, and the sides of the forked or slotted portion of the standard are provided with alined openings P, through which and the eye 0 a bolt Q, passes. The opposite end-of the brace N lies against the under side of the beam, and a bolt R passes through said'end and through the beam, thus firmly securing the beam and standard rigidly together. It will be noted that the bolt Q also passes through perforations in the lower end of the handles, whereby to secure the handles to the standard.
F indicates a bar having a central portion S, of wood, and the sides S of iron, which parts are secured together by means of bolt S At one end the sides S extend beyond the central wooden portion, and the extended ends of the sides are provided with alined openings S". The said extended ends of the sides of the bar F are adapted to embrace the lower end of the standard, and said bar is secured-to the standard by means of the bolt T,
which passes through the alined openings S and a transverse opening S formed in said standard. For connecting the rear end of the bar F with the plow-beam I employ an ad justable connection G, which comprises a loop or stirrup portion U, to which is connected one end of a threaded rod U which passes upwardly through and works in athreaded socket U which is arranged in an opening in the rear end of the plow-beam. By-turning the socket the connection between the bar F and beam may be tightened or loosened, as desired.
The plow when in the position seen in Fig.
1 is adapted to have various attachments secured theretoas, for instance, a turn-plow,-
as seen in Fig. 2. The turn-plowV has a rearwardly-projectingextensionV,whichis adapted to fit snugly within the slot of the standard, and through the plow a bolt V is passed, said bolt extending to the rear of the standard and carrying a clamping-plate V, which when the bolt is tightened up firmly clamps against the rear side of the standard, to thus firmly brace and secure the plow to the standard.
brace-rods Z are used to brace the handles,
which rods are bolted to the handles and to the rear end of the beam.
It will be observed that the various parts of the plow are detachably connected with each other, so that the said plow may be dismembered, and it will also be observed that the attachmentsuch as a turn-plow, a harrow, and a king-plow may be readily de tached from the plow to adapt said attachments for interchangeable connection therewith.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A plow comprising a plow-beam, a standard detachably secured thereto and being slot ted as described, handles detachably secured to said beam and standard, a bar F having a forked forward end embracing the lower end of the standard and extending rearwardly from the standard, said bar comprising the wooden central portion S and the metal side pieces S bolted together as described a bolt passing through said forked end and the standard to detachably secure the said bar and standard together, and a connection between the rear end of said bar and rear end of the plow-beam, a loop secured at one end to the bar, a rod having one end secured to the loop and the other end being threaded and screwing within a threaded socket'in the plow-beam.
2. Aplow comprising a plow-beam, astandard detachably secured thereto and being slotted as described, handles detachably secured to said standard and beam, a bar F detachably secured at one end to the standard, said bar comprising the wooden central portion S and the metal side pieces S bolted together as described a connection between thev rear end of the said bar and the rear end of the beam, and a brace E having one end passing within the slot of the standard and provided with an eye alining with openings in said standard, a bolt passing through the alincd openings, and a bolt passing through an opening in the other end of the brace and an opening in the plowbeam.
8. A plow comprising a plow-beam,a standard having a recess C in its upper face in which said plow-beam is fitted, and also havingthe flanges 0 bolts detachably securing the standard to the beam, said standard being slotted as described, a brace having one end extending into the slot of the standard, handles bolted intermediate their ends to the plow-beam, a bolt passing through alined perforations in the lower end of the handles, the standard and the said brace, a bar F detachably bolted at one end to the lower end of the standard, said bar comprising the wooden central portion and the metal side pieces all bolted together, a loop secured at one end to the bar, a rod having one end secured to the loop and its other end being threaded and screwing within a threaded socket in the plow-beam, all arranged as and for the purpose specified. i
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
